Oh Scrap! : Heart Blocks

Welcome all to the first official Oh Scrap! linky party! Over the next year, I am looking forward to sharing all sorts of ideas for using and storing your scraps.

I can't wait to see what fun and inventive ways you are coming up with for using your scraps!  So I hope you plan on linking up!

Every week, I will be sharing ideas on how to sew up your scraps. There will be tutorials, guest bloggers and links to free patterns and other websites to tempt you to get those scraps out.

With Valentine's Day coming up next month, I thought I would suggest something with a heart theme. Is there someone in your life you want to send a little love to? You have plenty of time to sew up a quick little table topper, a pillow cover or even a mini wall-hanging. And most of the materials I bet you can you can find in your scrap bin.

I think I first saved this idea when I saw the Color of my Heart free pattern put out by The Fat Quarter Shop. This pattern is written to make a 27.5" block and uses scraps that are 5" square. Perfect size for a wall hanging or even a fun floor pillow!

Then I saw Alycia at Alycia Quilts posted a tutorial on some heart blocks she was making. (Thanks Alycia for letting me share your quilt with my readers!)  I loved how she made these hearts from small bits of colors from her scraps. Her block finishes out at 18" which is ideal for a pillow cover or a table topper.

Alycia's quilt inspired me to put together a heart block for an upcoming charity quilt I was involved in. Everyone in the group loved making this fun little block. As the quilt was going to a little girl, we made our hearts turquoise, purple and lime green all set in white!

I decided to dig in my own scraps of red and gray and make some blocks for myself. I used 2.5" squares and sewed 3" squares to make the 5 pairs of HST's. With these scrap sizes, my blocks measure 12.5" unfinished.

If hearts don't do it for you, check out the links below to see what others have done with their scraps this week. So many ideas and not nearly enough time!

All right, here are a few details:

  • This linky party is for any scrappy project - It can be in-process or a finished piece.
  • You can link up your blog post (not your homepage) or Instagram photo from the past week that features your use of scraps.
  • If you are linking to a blog post, I ask that you link back to my blog somewhere in your post. So if you are writing about scraps, just get into the habit of including a link as there will be a linky party available every week!
  • If you are using Instagram, please use the hashtag #ohscrap.
  • This is a party so remember to socialize and comment on the posts of others.
  • Following my blog is not necessary but it sure would be great if you do!

I really like your heart, got me to thinking that I should make one in pinks for a neonatal quilt :-) Maybe that will be one of the projects I take to retreat...make a list right now!!

What a wonderful variety of hearts! I would never have thought to make them any other way than with the red color family. I am going to bookmark this for future reference.
