Here Fishy!

Here it is...the first quilt finish of 2019!

It is the (infamous) scrappy fish quilt I started late last year.
(In person, this quilt doesn't look quite so chaotic.  For some reason, it was really hard to photograph.)

This quilt started out as a way to use up some brown scraps.  I decided to add in some greens and make some sixteen patches.  The original plan was to stagger the blocks but that just turned into a disaster once the fishing fabrics were added.

Once I framed all the fishing themed fabrics with a tan and used them as an alternate block to the 16 patches, the quilt started coming together.

There are four silly comic blocks about fishing hidden throughout the quilt.
Just using up the odds and ends I have in the stash!

I used up more of the fish fabric on the back and framed it with some green and brown fabric I thought looked like seaweed.  I think I like the back more than I like the front!

The good news is this quilt used up fish fabrics that have been in my stash for over a decade and burned through enough brown scraps that I won't have to deal with them for a while.  Now I can just move on and play with some colors I actually enjoy!

Now I just need to find a fishermanperson that needs a quilt!

I’m sure you will find the fisherman or woman! Fishing may be almost as popular as quilting! Lol! Quilt turned out very nicely!

Hurray for a finish already! Go you!
I'm still intrigued with that staggered 16-patch setting. Are you going to experiment any more with it?

LOL, you sure had me laughing with this post. I remember you working on this quilt awhile back. It has a wonderful outdoor feel to it. And I love all of our pine trees surrounding our home. Very woodsy, I grew up in Topsfield, Massachusetts and had a horse when I turned 17. I was sooo fortunate as I was about 1/2 hour ride from Bradley Palmer State Park, less than 10 minutes from Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, and about an hour away from the Myopia Hunt Club with lots of fields. Needless to say I litterally spent all of my time in the woods. And still walk in the woods during the week.

Congratulations on your finish! I'm disappointed, however, as I was looking forward to seeing how you managed the staggered 16-patch setting. I think there's still potential in that setting, but probably the fish fabric wasn't calm enough.

Hooray for another finish! You're right, that backing fabric is perfect for this quilt. I have a finish to share on Sunday - hooray for that, too!

Oh, it looks great! I wasn't so certain about it when you started out. You have such a knack for making anything/everything work. Yahoo!

A very clever ending to the fish tale. Love the seaweed and the large fishes fabric on the back.

It turned out beautifully! So glad that you were able to use up the fish fabric. It looks like highlighting the theme fabric was your plan all along.

I'm in shock and awe that you have a finish on January 4 (and you blogged about it, at that!). Good for you for using up those long-stashed fish fabrics. : )

Congrats on a fun finish. That has to feel so good to use up those older odds and ends. It might be a fun quilt of valor, I bet some of those vets really like fishing.

You did a great job getting all those fabrics to play nicely together, Cynthia! The tan borders really did calm it down, and I love the big chunk of fishes on the back. And yes, the green and brown on the back DOES look like seaweed! I was just thinking that when I read your description :)

It was a great way of using up some old fabric and not favorite color scraps. Nicely done.
