Leftover Strip Set Finish

I am ready to share my first finish from my orphan block suit case.  This one really isn't made from orphan blocks - rather it is made using the last unused pieces of some leftover strip piecing.

I save these last little bits and usually try to make 4 patches from them.  I think I have used most of these pieces that were big enough to yield a true four patch - now I mostly had rather small leftovers.  So this time, I decided to just pair them up and sew them as is.

And this is what I ended up doing with them!
Kinda cute, huh!

Because my strip sets created all different lengths of blocks, I cut all the bigger ones to 5" x 4.5" and ran them down the center.  The other blocks I trimmed to 4" x 4".

For the background I used a one yard piece of a white fabric with a tiny blue dot - it was just enough fabric for the top and the binding.

To match the irregular sized piecing, I quilted it with vertical irregularly spaced lines.

I found a fun blue fabric for the backing.
It was just the right size so I knew it was the perfect choice!

I have the second orphan block quilt top finished and I just need to quilt it up.
I really enjoy playing with all of these little bits!

I love how you use every bit of fabric. I love how you mix and match not only textures and colors but also block sizes! and your quilts always look GREAT!

I like how the angle where the sets of two meet are consistent throughout the top. (Is that weird thing to say?!) It provides a sense of cohesion to the design. And that polka-dot background fabric? Brilliant!

This is so cool. Now you will have the rest of us trying to “make” these kinds of scraps to reproduce the design. Tee hee!

That is a fun design! I saw the same thing as Michelle - that angle going the same direction through all of your blocks is a great detail. And I love the polka dot background fabric, too!

Very cute finish! I love those wonky little four patches. Trimming them up to squares and rectangles lets the angled junctions really sparkle :)

I love how those wonky 4-patches turned out. I'm going to keep them in mind for using up my strip ends. Thanks for sharing!
