Oh Scrap! : RSC15 Turquoise

With just over a week left to the month, I thought I had better sew up my Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks.  The color for this month is soft blue but I decided I had more scraps toward the turquoise color so that is the direction I went.

These might be my favorite blocks so far!

As I finish the blocks, I have been adding them to one of my design walls.  I hope July is either orange or red - I need some more hot colors in this quilt!

On Friday night, I worked on three scrap quilts at once - my RSC15 blocks, my Scrap-A-Palooza quilt and my Scrap Vortex. It was one happy mess!

Circle Quilt Finish (and Tutorial)

While recently sorting some scraps from a friend, I was inspired to make a small baby quilt by a pretty stack of pink and gray fabrics.

I decided to add a few scraps from my own fabric and came up with this fun fabric pull.  Earlier this month, I made completing this quilt my June goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes with Sew Bittersweet Designs.

Here it is.  The Fastest. Quilt. Ever.

I have turned that little pile of larger scraps into this fun raw edged circle quilt.
And I thought I would share a tutorial on how I did it.

Because I was cutting up some scrap pieces,  I ended up cutting quarter circles.  I used one of my 10" longarm rulers but a plate or other circle template works fine too.  If you have really big scraps, you can cut full circles and quarter them later.

You really don't need them to be perfect.

Next, simply pin them to a corner of your background fabric.  I cut my background squares to 7".

I then top stitched the quarter circle 1/4" from the edge to the background square.  I did back stitch at the beginning and the end (which will be hidden in the seam allowance when you sew up the blocks).
I also shortened my stitch length a bit.

I prepared and chain pieced all of my blocks at once.
In minutes I had all of my blocks sewn.

Then it was just a matter of laying out the blocks and sewing up the quilt top.  For my backgrounds, I used up a leftover piece of light gray solid and some white Kona from my stash.  I love these two toned backgrounds and the irregular placement of the color.  I think it adds to the whimsy!

Because the circles are raw edged, the edges of the circles will fray a bit with each washing.

Here are a couple past quilts I have made using this process.  You can play around with the placement and the circle sizes!

A Lovely Year of Finishes

Hurray, I am back in the saddle and keeping focused on a few finishes thanks to BitterSweet Designs!  I look forward to seeing what others accomplish toward their June goal at the end of the month.
I hope to see your project there!

And for all you bargain shoppers, Craftsy is having a Summer Steals Sale this weekend on their fabric and kits.  I know I will be picking up some quilt backings, Kona solids and a few precuts at some really great prices.  Quilters do love a bargain!

Scrap Vortex Progress

Amanda Jean over at crazy mom quilts has been hosting an informal QAL for her scrap vortex quilt. I decided to join in and I have been having a ball sewing up my tiny scraps into larger and larger irregular shaped blocks.

It was time to put them up on my design wall so I could see how it looked. I was planning on sewing up a kid-sized quilt but as you can see I got a bit out of control with my sewing. Even after filling the wall space, I still have a large stack of blocks.

I thought this quilt would be a great opportunity to get rid of my black and multi-colors scraps. My initial thought was to use all sorts of colors but settled on keeping in the hot colors - red, pink, orange and yellow. As you can see, I also included a bit if turquoise and lime bits just for fun.

This quilt has been a great leaders/enders project so it has come together really quickly. I look forward to reading the next steps which should come out this week.  If you are participating in the Scrap Vortex QAL, I would love for you to link up pictures this Sunday on Oh Scrap!

Amazingly, I STILL have a lot of scraps left!

Oh Scrap! : Scrap-A-Palooza Quilt #16 Part Two

Last week I shared the offset log cabin block I was going to use for the newest Scrap-A-Palooza quilt.  Last night I finally finished sewing up all of the blocks in the 9 colors I have planned for this quilt.  I made four blocks of each color.

This is really the first quilt where I have explored a scrappy low volume background.  In the past, I have always used very safe prints together like white on white or all light gray prints.  While I am still keeping this one subdued, it has been fun stretching my wings a bit.

One of the questions I get asked fairly often is into what what colors do I sort my scraps.  These blocks represent 9 of the 12 colors.  I like to sort out turquoise from blue and lime from green.  Add bins for brown, black and low volume and these are my 12 color bins.

Now for you to share your scrappy projects.  I hope we some some Scrap Vortex posts.  I forgot to take a photo with my camera but I will share mine later this week.

Another Quilt Roundup!

I thought I would share some of the quilts I have seen recently using my Life is a Highway pattern.  It is always a pleasure when my clients bring me the tops for me to quilt them!

First up is actually the initial quilt I made using a Road 15 (by Sweetwater) jellyroll.  No border on this one - it uses an entire jellyroll leaving just a bit of the selvages.  No waste or scraps with this pattern!

I finally finished sewing on the last bit of the binding a few night ago.   I used a tree fabric I had in my stash for the backing.  The colors were perfect!

Here is a colorful small quilt made with strips pulled from someone's stash and scrap bin.  It is so happy!  This one was made following the modifications in the pattern to make a 40" x 54" baby quilt.

And this lovely one is made using a Juggling Summer by Zen Chic jelly roll.  As you can see, this quilt has a border to frame it all up nicely.

And in case you missed it, here is one I made using a Feed Company (Also by Sweetwater) jelly roll.
I absolutely adore the plaid border!

Happy Friday!!
