An Out of this World Finish

I knew that If I focused on some finishes, I could quickly cross a number of items off my list!
Today's finish is Out of this World!



 This project started out with two Lily & Loom Space Camp charm squares.  These are one of the Craftsy fabric lines and I like to ensure that the quality is nice if I am going to be an affiliate.  
I like to use the products I promote!

I can say this fabric is really nice.  There was almost no lint or fraying as I assembled the quilt and the colors in the fabric are bright and well printed.




I pulled some Kona Navy and Coal to go with the fabrics.  I used Cheryl Brickey's Building Blocks pattern (Moda Bakeshop) as inspiration.  Mine looks a little different but 2 charm squares works perfectly for this layout (with the ability to toss a few out).




The space themed prints in this collection are so much fun.  Perfect for that special future astronaut!




I should have ordered some backing fabric from the same collection but you know I can't wait to get things quilted up and finished once a top is complete.  So I pulled a Kaffe Collective piece that was already in my stash.



 The finished quilt measures about 49" x 54".  And it is cute, cute, cute!

So I was really pleased with the quality of the fabric and the prints included in the collection are adorable.  If you want to make one for yourself, I see this collection is already on clearance as Craftsy releases new ones quite often.


I should also say, I tested out Craftsy's new Pima Cotton thread and I have to say it ran really nicely through my machine.  I have already almost used up an entire spool!

Oh Scrap! : Garden Blocks

Last month, I decided to start a new Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt.




Remember my little red strawberry block I made for July?





It is now joined by a cute orange tangerine block made from 2.5" squares.





A chubby pumpkin block was also added to the mix.  I decided to use 2.5" strips for this block.



I will also be "planting" a short row of carrots in my RSC garden quilt.  
I used Sally's carrot pattern as a starting point.

I am planning on my blocks for this quilt being all different sizes.  It will be a puzzle to get them into a quilt top once I complete the rainbow.  Can't wait!

A Valued Finish

There are just some quilts that are pure entertainment!

And today's finish was one I found intriguing and enjoyed every step of the process. It is no secret I love a challenge so using scraps to play with color values was fun, fun, fun!



I started out making these blocks using some scraps a friend had given me.  The inspiration came from a quilt Linda (at koka quilts) was working on.



 Today, I am ready to share the finished quilt.

I must have taken a hundred photos of this quilt but none of them do it justice.  Or maybe they do because this quilt is one that I questioned myself through every seam.  But rather than give up, I continued forward and just let the quilt evolve.

Is the contrast enough? Is the background too busy?  Was it wise to add the neutral center squares?  Can you even tell I added half diamonds to the border?

Question after question.




 And I think that is what is so intriguing about this quilt.  You have to look at it a bit more to see the patterns that are there.  




Ninety percent of the scraps in this quilt were gifted to me as a stack of unloved pre-cut squares.  I did add a lot of the background fabrics but I pretty much depleted everything I was given.  I feel a big sense of accomplishment that I turned what I had into this quilt.



Because I like this quilt ALOT!
(And it is because I don't know if I like this quilt AT ALL!)

But I do.....I really do...I think.




In case you want to know, I used  one of my oldest stash pieces on the back.  I think it works but I question this choice too.

But those things all just make me want to laugh and hug this quilt more.   :)

All Stocked Up!

A giant box arrived on my doorstep this afternoon.  Now I have no reason not to finish up a number of my UFOs.



I love to have a nice stash of backings on hand so that my finishes are never held up waiting on fabric.  I also like to pick up my backings when they are on sale or out of a clearance section.  Like all of my fabric, I keep my backing sorted by color and I try to keep a couple of choices in each colorway.  Connecting Threads has their wide backings on sale right now and moved some items (like Amanda Jean Nyberg's latest collection) to their clearance section so I bought a bunch of 4 yard cuts.  This stack makes me want to go sew!



The one I love the most was the cheapest one!  I bet this one doesn't stay in my stash long.

Now my backings are all stocked up just waiting for me to finish up a quilt top!

Oh Scrap! : Orange

A new month means a new color for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  
August is orange...definitely a favorite color of mine!



First up is my zigzag blocks.  These 12" blocks will eventually make a donation quilt.  I know I am going to need two blocks in some colors but I will determine what those will be later.  Right now I am just making one block a month.



I also pulled a bunch of strings and finished up three of my half log cabins.  Some leftover nine patches were the inspiration on this design.  I really like how they are turning out.

I still need to make a couple blocks for my Squared Away Sampler and my fruit/veggie quilt in orange.  I look forward to seeing all the orange scrappiness this month!
