I have still been working diligently each week on my blocks for Happy Quilting's Irish Chain Twist Quilt Along. This week we started working on the final block which according to Melissa's instructions is raw edged appliqued. Being a fan of needle turn applique, I decided break from the group and use that technique to make my blocks.
Of course there were some challenges I had to overcome right off the bat. First, we cut our fabrics weeks ago so my squares for this block did not contain adequate allowances for me to properly needle turn the edge. So I had to slightly adjust the template. I also have small gaps between the shapes, which I would not normally have. In looking at the final layout, this shouldn't have any negative impact on the layout.
With all of my shapes now cut, I am working on getting my blocks hand appliqued. I have two blocks done this week with three more to go for next - which will still work with the schedule Melissa has planned.
Now to try and find something interesting on TV to keep me company while I hand sew.

Can you recommend a good tutorial/book for making hand appliqué look good? I need pointers. Thanks!
They look lovely!!! And I totally agree, the negative space I think will only add to the design ;) Great job and have fun hand stitching through the coming days :)
Very nice, I like the crisp look of the turned applique.
Your hand appliqué looks so pretty! I think it adds a nice touch.
Looks like you are master of needle turn applique!
What lovely green blocks! Yes, I found you through linking up with Val's Studio. Beautiful work.
Janie
Cyndy, your orange peel blocks are simply lovely - that soft green is wonderful!

I really enjoy needle turn myself. Nice blocks. Thanks for sharing.
it looks as if you are working out your issues nicely! these greens are saying a happy st. patrick's day to me, even though it was yesterday. =)
I felt the same way about the raw edge applique, so I made my own template and turned the edge under. I haven't decided if I will blanket stitch with my machine or hand stitch it yet. I also have a gap in the center. I'm toying with the idea of adding a button in the center when I'm done with everything.
