Rainbow Scrap Challenge Sampler

First, I want to thank everyone who sent warm thoughts my way when my power was out.  I was without power and heat for almost 5 days but sadly there are still thousands who are still waiting for help.  That ice storm was a bad one!

So I have not even been in my sewing room for over a week.  I do have a finish to share however.  I was going to share it last week but had no internet access.

This year, I participated in SoScrappy's Column Along for RSC16.  Each month I made a certain block in the defined monthly color.  I decided to graduate the hue of my blocks from light to dark.  I only used fabrics from my scrap bin.

I did share the blocks up on my design wall before I sewed them together.  I think many of you really liked the layout.

Somehow, when it came time to sew everything together, I went a different way.  That is the downside of being a late night sewist!  You get a lot of hair-brain ideas  :)

The thought of matching up all those seams just didn't seem all that exciting.  Plus, if you have followed along for any amount of time - you know I love a puzzle!

So I started moving the blocks from one design wall across the room to another and they became all jumbled up.  I had a wonderful time fitting them all together so they could be sewn up into components then a quilt top.

Here it is all finished up.  It is one crazy scrappy quilt!

I am not sure it is a "better" layout but I sure had a ball sewing it up.  I did end up with a partial seam - which I didn't see until I was almost finished piecing the quilt top.  Darn it!

The blocks were all made using Kona Snow as the background and all the prints came out of the scrap bin.  The backing I had recently found in a sale section.

The quilt is quite dark on the bottom - I do wish I had more lighter scraps but  I used what I had!
A big thanks to Angela for organizing this RSC event.
It is a great way to use up those scraps that just seem to multiply.

Most of my RSC quilts end up going to charities and I think I will send this one off also.  I realized last week just how comforting a warm quilt can be when you need a hug!

Have a wonderful Holiday!

You've done a great job with the column sampler - not only do the colours of each column blend so well across the quilt, but I love the gradation from top to bottom. And then you go an mix up all the blocks! Woah - I am so in love with the results!! This is one spectacular quilt!!

While the straight row of blocks shows off each block I love the way you "mixed" it up in your layout. Even the light to dark effect is fun.

I LOVE it! I know that was not an easy puzzle as all of the column blocks were not the same size, if I remember correctly. So glad you've recovered from the ice storm. Our area is more susceptible to ice than snow so I can feel your pain. One year we were without power for over a week! Now with an invalid in the house we are at least on a higher priority list (behind hospitals and other critical services). Best wishes for a blessed Christmas.

Love the layout a whole lot more than the straight rows one. I love that the top is lighter. Excellent job. Happy Holidays! ;^)

Oh what fun! I love what you did with all of those blocks! The light to dark layout is a favorite of mine, and it's so neat that you were able to keep it while mixing all of the blocks up.

Love the Quilt - so glad you have your power back on 5 day is a long time to be without but Mother Nature plays tricks on us sometimes and the electric company works as hard as they can and around the clock to fix us. Merry Christmas to you

So glad your power has been restored... I couldn't go that long without sewing!
What a fabulous scrappy quilt! Love your layout!

Wow, it looks amazing! The layout you chose just sings!

I love the new layout. Much more interesting than the original, and you are using your brain power which is good. I understand ice storms, and no power. Luckily we are on city water so at least did have water, which we didn't have when we had a well.

Keep on designing. It's fun to see everyone's crativness.

While the row by row was interesting, the "jumbled" version is so much more so. Wonderful job of putting together a real brain teaser puzzle. I would love to take a bundle of blocks and fit them together. I have a project similar to that, a panel of wonderful sentiments and bright spring flowers that I have already chopped up and bordered with bright colors to match - each piece is a different size - now I just have to find a place where I can play with them and make some fillers to fit. A project on my list for 2017.

I loved all the blocks in neat rows, but then I saw your jumbled layout and thought WOW! That is an amazing quilt! Just Beautiful! It is one that will certainly be treasured. Glad to hear you have your power back.

Love it! I'm not a real "row by row" quilter so your mixing of the blocks into a wonderful scrappy block quilt is perfect!

Like it much better in the mixed up version--besides it is more "you" that way!. Have a great holiday. Pam R

RSC Surprise?! LOVE it!!! The gradation within the columns was nice, but this layout is even better. I might be tempted to call it Rainbow Scramble! LOL Whatever you call it, it is sure to please its recipient.

Oh my, I had to read your post a couple of times before I realized that you didn't actually sew them in columns! what a creative idea. It turned out fabulous. I can't believe you managed to get anything done after your outage. I am sure you were set back in all of your activities.

I love your color jumble arrangement! Ever so much more interesting than the columns. Beautiful finish!

What an inspired adaptation. Truly creative.
I've always maintained that, if the terrorists want to bring true chaos to our country, all they need to do is bring down the power grid. Glad you are back on the grid and online. Enjoy the Holidays.

I love how you still somehow managed to keep the layout from light to dark. It looks great Cindy!
Wow... 5 days is a long time to go without power and I feel bad for those who have to go longer. Glad you have yours back now, just in time for Christmas!

I liked your original layout but the quilt you eventually created is just marvellous! Don't know how you turned one into the other - a little Christmas 🎄 magic I think! Sorry to hear about your power outage, not much fun but hope all is well now. Merry Christmas 🎁

You made it through the ice storm! I hope that is the last one for you this year! I really like the new layout you did. Your crazy ideas usually turn out pretty darn good!

What a fun quilt! I prefer this one over the straight columns - and I'm sure the recipient will enjoy it all too!
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas season! Hopefully everyone in your area has power again soon!

I really like the 'mixed' quilt. Nice job. Thanks for sharing. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Love it! You are so generous to give it away. I'm sure the recipient will be thrilled.

That's an amazing quilt! But the row quilt would've been great, also. They're very different, obviously, so one could be tempted to want both. If you do another challenge, you can always make the row quilt. Interestingly, both quilts were lighter at the top, so you were just oblivious to that in the layingbput procesd. Maybe you forgot or didn't have room to step back and take a good luck and review the lay-out? I'm sure it's the kind of thing you can't see up close.

Congrats on a wonderful colorful finish. It's just another form of a sampler quilt:-) I thought of you last night as we lost power from heavy wet snow. Thankfully we were without for only a couple hours, but it was afterdark and it gets a tad boring then!! Merry Christmas.

Oh, what fun! You must have had a blast puzzling out that layout!
Glad you got that power back on! My many years in rural northern Vermont left me well acquainted with losing power, so I know what you went through. Hopefully it won't repeat itself!

Hi there Cynthia, I love your new jumbled up layout. It's so much more interesting to the eye and it just does a much better job than rows. It is now Boxing Day here in NZ and we have eaten far too much and thinking about walking it off...not!
Hope you are enjoying your Christmas Day.
Warm wishes
Clare

I really love what changing the layout of the blocks has done for this quilt. But I don't know why I'm surprised,I love most everything you produce. 👏😁

Myra @ Busy Hands Quilts said...

Wow, I would have thought the first picture was the best, but really, the jumbled up one takes the cake. I'll have to remember that!

I do like how it came out. I don't know which layout I like better but congrats to you for finishing it and using up all those scraps.
