Riding the UFO Wave

At the beginning of this year, I made the decision that I was going to get to the bottom of my UFO pile. (Okay, you can stop laughing now....)  But I really do want to make a big dent in the pile!

Well for some reason, I felt inspired to pick a bag of fabric that has been sitting on the floor of my fabric closet for about a decade and finish up the quilt I had planned for it.

I am not sure that this is exactly what I had in mind but it was the path the quilt took.  The bag must have had about 30 yards of fabric in there and as you can see, I used very little of each print.  So I had a whole lot of fabric left over.

Almost of the fabrics in the quilt are older Martha Negley, Carla Miller and Kaffe Fassett prints.  These prints are such an explosion of color!

The center fabric however was a last minute substitution.  I am not even sure when or where I got it but I have never wanted to cut into it.  The fat quarter I had worked perfectly.

My original plan was to use this Martha Negley print (I just pinned a piece over the pink one when it was on my design wall.)  I am not sure I made the best choice but I do prefer the pink center.

Oh well, I am certainly not changing it now!

I was able to use a few of the remaining pieces in the bag for the backing too.  The rest went back into the Kaffe stash - which is now falling off the shelf.

This is the third older UFO that I have finished already this year.  I still have about 20 UFOs on the list but it is a step in the right direction!

Love this quilt. Well I would as it's right on my colour palette. I think you made the right decision to go with the pink/purple centre. The original choice blends in too well xx

Love the simplicity of this one and the fact that it is DONE makes it a perfect finish! Your're making great progress already this year.

Excellent call on that center piece -- and how awesome to find bag full of THOSE kinds of fabrics. What a treasure to have on your shelf for future use!

You've made one of those fantastic quilts out of remarkable prints. I love it, and pink was the right choice, IMO. I see something gorgeous like this and think, "I should try that". Then, I get to fabric store and am just overwhelmed by the print choices and eventually wander back to the area I feel comfortable working in. Some day....

What a bright, fun finish, I really like the center you chose. I have some fat quarters I am planning on using for the center of some quilts soon. :)

I like that center piece, too - and it was the perfect spot for a large print like the one you chose! Your design looks like ti would be fun to make in all kinds of different scraps. I'll have to keep that idea in mind!

You definitely did the right thing in changing the centre, it gives it a great lift. Without it I think it may have looked a little flat. That's a lot of UFO's, I have a few myself but not near as many as that, although one or two are a little old. My question is if the top is finished but not layered or quilted is it a UFO?

What a fabulous quilt! I love these kinds of fabrics and colours. Yes, the pink was definitely the correct choice for the center as it contrasts with the yellows to each side of it. The other choice dulls those yellow pieces and they get lost. A great UFO finish! Congratulations.

I love this quilt. The simple shapes are just made for KF fabrics, showcasing them so well.

UFOs - I know all about them! And I'm trying hard to get through some of mine. Your new finish is so lovely and colourful, congratulations!!

I had a big smile on my face as you wrote you were going to get through your UFO list... until you said you have about 20 -- the laugh's on me... I have more than double that. Can I blame quilting for over 30 years? The center fab is wonderful. I didn't like the original selection ... made the quilt blah. Your change makes the whole quilt sparkle. Good call.

What a beautiful quilt...so bright and cheery. And if only it was just 3 UFO quilts you've finished...what about the orphan blocks and the quilts from those. Weren't you doing some other stray quilts, too? Great job.

Love it just the way it is. Since you have so much of the fabrics left, you can make another one with the yellow center but not use as many yellows in the other rounds. Or use it with blues and purples.

Beautiful colors and fabrics. Way to bust that UFO. I love how you did a pieced back as well. What a happy finish.

I love the quilt. I prefer the pink center too. Kaffe Fasset is one of my favorites and I hope to use some of my leftover scraps as you did here.

I know that feeling of our needing to get some UFO's off the floor/shelf, it is such a good feeling when we peel off even just a few. We gotta start somewhere! Your choice of the pink center would have been mine also. Keep on whittling the pile down!

Wow! This one just jumped off my computer screen with it's beautiful exuberance! What I like best about it is how the more muted concentric sashing makes the rectangles of color pop and glow. And yes, absolutely the pink center was the right choice :) Love it!

That must have been a tough decision for the center block. Both look great and each change the look of the quilt as far as which colors catch the eye.

You're doing very well! Three UFOs in two months. There are ten months left in the year, do if you continue at the same pace, you'll get another 15 UFOs done, leaving you with only five at the end of the year! Go for it!

Oh, what a happy quilt! Pitch perfect on that center print - much as I love orange, that pink is IT!

I like this design. I think we all have the same thought re UFO's, including the subsequent laughter. LOL Good luck.

Great quilt! The pink is definitely the better centre fabric.
