A View of my Stash

Quite often I get comments from readers that seem to believe I have a huge fabric stash.  I did a bit of organizing today so I thought I would share a few pictures of the fabric I have in my stash.  My fabric is stored in a walk-in closet so I can have it out and not worry about sun damage.

Here are all of the prints that I have in my yardage stash.  These are pieces that are bigger than a fat quarter but less than 2 yards.  I try and keep it organized by colors - hot, cool, multi/browns and low volume/blacks

And then there is my Kaffe Fassett stash.  All of this is probably 5-15 years old.  (Yes, there are some of the really in-demand OOP pieces in there.)  Most of the cuts are one to three yards.

I don't pull from this stash much and often contemplate destashing some of it but it is just so nice to pet!  I think I will always be a fan of his prints.

I also have a stash of solids.
(Sorry - I didn't refold these today)

On the top are Grunge and Quilter's Linen

Kona Solids and Boundless Solids are all stuffed in the center.

And on the bottom are Peppered Cotton, Essex Linens and other woven fabrics.

Not pictured are my bolts of Kona - I buy bolts for colors like white, snow, navy, lipstick, chocolate, black and others I use a lot.

Also not pictured are my backings.  They are stored in a dresser and hard to capture.  But I keep all of my cuts that are larger than a couple yards in one place so I don't have to dig through my entire fabric stash when I finish a quilt top.
I keep those sorted by colors too and always try and buy them on sale.

Now some of you may ask - but where are your scraps?  That will have to wait for another post. (It is still organized like I shared here.)  A scrap for me is anything fat quarter and smaller.  They are stored on the other side of the closet and a gigantic mess right now.

So I am curious....Is this what you expected my fabric stash would look like?
I usually feel like I have a lot of fabric too.  But then I compare it to my local friends and I think I need to go shopping!  (You know who you are...I hear you laughing)

Have a good week!

Yes, I think you need to organize those scraps so we can see those as well! What you've shown in these photos just doesn't add up! Or just take a pic like they are now - we all get messy when we're sewing :) (Love those old Kaffe rainbows...)

Oops - I just went back and read your post on your actual scraps, so you're off the hook!

This seems like a very reasonable amount of fabric. Of course, that's because it's about the size of my stash :) And my system is fairly similar to yours, color sorted, browns/neutrals together, with larger cuts for backings kept separate. I'm envious of your KF stack, though!

Sometimes I get a glimpse of other folks' stashes on their blogs and I'm sort of shell shocked by how much they have. I show those photos to my hubby to give him some perspective, ha!

That's smaller than I thought you'd have considering how many quilts you produce! It looks lovely all neatly folded and organized like that :) And I sometimes feel a little shocked by the stashes I see on IG.

I have done exactly what Louise has...shown Hubby other people's stash just so he has perspective. It seems stash is relative and limitless in that no one ever seems to have all they want. I'm new to quilting but the pull to build a pile is strong. And I enjoy looking at what other people have so thanks for showing Cynthia.

Your stash is a good size and useable! I confess that mine is much bigger, but that is partly because I inherited my sister's 14 garbage bags of stash about 5 years ago when she gave up quilting. I love to make scrap quilts, so a stash is a necessary part of my creativity. I also tend to buy fabrics for it when they are less than $5 a yard. Thank you for sharing!

I enjoyed that peek at your stash! The shelf of solids really caught my eye - a pretty rainbow. My fabric shelves could use some reorganizing - it's always hard to tear myself away from the sewing machine to spend time straightening up!

For such an avid quilter, I did expect your fabric stash to be a lot larger. Your stash is a manageable amount. You are surely an efficient quilter to ture out so many quilts with less than a store full of fabric.

I think I have a larger stash but I think you have way more KFC then me. I have a good amount but your pile looks to be double, what I have. I will have to go back and read about your scraps. I was sorting out an over flowing box today. My only bolts are white Kona. I have trouble keeping track of the large backing so last year I made a list.

I once ordered my fabric by size then color; now I just do it by color (and some themes, like musical instruments, novelties). Too often I missed an opportunity to use something that would have been just right because it was with a different size tub. But just now it is a mess because I keep pulling for projects and leaving piles. Time for a big sort.

Loved the peep at your stash and I'm one who thought you would have had a room full of fabrics rather than a closet, but I loved seeing your Kaffe selection, always so very colourful. Show us your scrap storage soon, please!

Oh, definitely, you need to go shopping, LOL!!! If only I could get mine down to that level.

Nice stash collection. I've even read about your scraps and lusted after them too! Lol

I'll admit it...I thought there would be much more! I admire you even more that you keep it at a minimum and can still knock out so many amazing quilts! I don't feel I have a huge stash, especially after seeing pictures of what others have! A fabric store in my room is not what I have! However you manage your stash it works for you!

My stash is smaller but it's interesting to see how we each work, what we collect, and how we organize our material.

a very healthy and organized stash! if you run out of room, you can store those kaffe fabrics at my place (wink, wink)....

I love seeing peaks behind the scenes--thanks! You mention that you have a few Kona colors in bolts--how/where do you buy those? I've seen other people mention that as well but I have no idea how to go about buying a bolt.

I'm currently trying to fold and stack my stash, since it's a big solid mess. That stack of solids you think is messy? You have no idea... 8)
Thanks for the peek!

I too loved having a wee peep at your stash! Love the pic of all that Kaffe colour! I think you are certainly very clever to make your stash work for you the wonderful way you do!
Mine is more lots of fat 1/4's or less, in lots of colour coded baskets as I don't often buy large amounts. Fabric here in NZ is expensive, and postage is slowly creeping up & up these days for online shopping. I'm working towards #usingeverylittlebit I have here at home and some recycling too this year!

I love looking at people's stashes! I don't have nearly that much. I've never bought fabric just to buy it, but now I sort of wish I had since I'm retired and money has to be more managed.

I LOVE your stash. What inspired me is that you have a stash of larger cuts. I don't have a lot of room, so I usually buy 1/2 yard or fat quarters. It's not often that I have 3 yards of something to play with! The exception now is that over the holidays I bought 108inch backings in several colors, so finishing a quilt is much quicker!

Nope, you need to go shopping, hahahaha. And I really need to stay home and sew and stay off the computer if I ever plan to use up 'most' of my stash!

Very tidy! A scrap for me is a FQ or smaller, too. But, since they're mixed in with everything else, sometimes I pull out "the perfect piece' just to find it's a scrappy mess! Cutting up the scraps into useable sized pieces is one of my goals this year. So, I guess you're my new hero! lol

Great stash.....I thought you would have more also LOL! I always enjoy seeing the stash that other quilters have!

I would love to have some of the Kaffe fabric. I want to make a queen size bed quilt and I will need to cut out a lot of flowers. I think I will be collecting for another 10 years. Have fun with your fabric.
