Last Sunday, I shared my process on how I came up with a quilt design for a stack of scraps.
I was hoping to have a finished quilt to share today but I decided to take a day off and lunch with a friend. So all I can share is the quilt top.
I started out with these orange and blue batik scraps. Some were wide strips and some were chunks of fabrics leftover from previous projects.
I had to wait until the bit of snow we got melted so I could snap a photo. The light was fading fast!
The quilt measures 48 x 54 so it is a nice size lap quilt.
Even though the quilt is only two colors, I was able to find fabrics in varying shades so there is nice contrast between the blocks.
Wait until you see the backing! I don't use batiks anymore and I have no large batik cuts in my stash so I made do with what I have. I did try to trade with a friend but she didn't have any in her stash either.
So the backing will have orange, but I paired it with a color that is not on the front.
Crossing my fingers it will look okay!
(....maybe next week it will be a finished quilt and we can all laugh!)
Have a wonderful weekend!

It looks like you've really taken advantage of those scraps and oddments. Looking forward to what you chose for the back.
I like it!! you are so very creative with what you have! Can't wait to see the backing
Love the variety and tones. Works as a whole unit- great goal for scrappy.
Wonderful quilt! And the back is not the front. You can put anything you want on there. I once put pepto-bismol (sp?) pink on the back of a quilt made with forest green, navy blue, country red and gold blocks with an off-white background. And you know what? The gal who got it LOVED it! Im sure whatever you've chosen will be perfect.
That was fast, but why am I surprised, you are the speed queen!
Beautiful top. Glad you were able to have lunch with a friend. The quilt will wait.
Another lovely creation. Looking forward to seeing the back. Sunnies at the ready!!!!!
Beautiful top and so speedy, too!
Orange is one of my favorite colors, so you know I love this quilt top! I cannot wait to see what you've done for the back!
What a fun quilt top. Orange has really grown on me since it is my youngest's favorite color. I’m looking forward to seeing the back.
I really like how that turned out! I'll have to remember this design idea, because I have a bunch of scraps that a friend gave me that would work for something similar. Thanks for the inspiration!
I don’t think Back has to match the front all that well. After all, you don’t see the two sides at the same time! So as long as they aren’t completely incongruous, I often use something on the back that I wouldn’t have used together with the fabrics in the top!
There IS no quilt police! LOL
The color placement and value variations really make this one dynamic! I had to look carefully to see that the blocks are actually quite regular in their layout. Nifty! And I agree with several other commenters that the sky's the limit when it comes to backings :)
The Scrap Queen strikes again. Waytago!
Now you have me very curious and excited to see the back! The different shades/tones of colors make this quilt! Beautifully done! Yay to you for going to lunch with a friend!
This is great, Cynthia - love the block and the color combo. You've inpired me so much with your posts and your skill at using up stuff. I'm working through my orphan blocks and stash in a similar way to yours, and I'm finding it really satisfying!! Thank you so much for sharing!

Using two colors in different shades and prints make this look much more complicated than it is. Love it!
