If you finish a big bed quilt, do you get extra points?
Here is my "exploding" bowtie quilt made from Kaffe Fassett scraps.
It is queen sized (80 x 88") and all mine!
I made these blocks as part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Both the Kaffe prints and the background fabrics all came from the scrap bins.
It took me just under a year to make all of the blocks.
I used each rainbow color to add a fun ripple effect. I just made blocks each month of the scraps I had on hand with no layout plans at the time. And it was amazing that I was able to successful make the blocks I made work into this layout.
Because this was a larger bed quilt, I needed a really big backing so I had only one Kaffe option available. It is a little dark but I usually don't care what is on the backs of my quilts., I went with what I had rather than hold up the quilt while I bought new fabric.
When I get this close to a finish, I like to get it done!
This layout is very similar to a quilt I did earlier in the year. This quilt measured 48" x 64" so it makes a nice lap quilt. And rather than a light background, I used a dark solid plum.
When I posted the lap quilt, I had quite a few requests for a pattern. Maybe someday I will get to writing up a formal pattern but for now, I have written up some quick instructions and included diagrams/coloring sheets for a baby size (40 x 40"), the lap size (48" x 64" and the queen size layouts (80 x 88"). These layouts are all based on an 8" finished block. So if you want a bigger or smaller quilt, you can simply change the block size.
I have also decided to ask for a small fee for these download (You can find it with the rest of my patterns on Payhip). Even though it is not a "professional" pattern, it still takes a lot of time to create the diagrams and write the text. I appreciate the support!
Keep your eyes open for my version of a baby quilt in this pattern. I am cutting my fabric today!
Have a great weekend!

Love, love, love, your exploding bow ties.
Yes, you extra points for a big quilt, and five more because it is beautiful, and ten more points because you WROTE a Pattern!!! Whoop!
Congratulations on a new bed quilt for yourself! You get bonus points for a large quilt and for being able to keep it to enjoy. :)
Yes, I agree you get extra points for making a queen sized quilt! We have a queen bed in our guest bedroom, and it needs a quilt, but I've never tackled queen size! What size are your bowties? Also, I love what you did with the layout. You are so good with color!
Of course you get extra extra points--love that bow tie quilt--
enjoy, di
Love your bow tie blocks and they turned into a wonderful quilt! Extra, extra points for size and design!
Congrats! on another FABULOUS finish. Thanks for making the "pattern" sheet available for us. Much appreciated!!
What a beautiful quilt with a fantastic layout. And thanks for the reminder to use my Kaffe fabric instead of hiding it in my hoard...
When I first saw your pretty quilt I thought about ripples on a pond. Beautiful finish as always.
Love it !
Lovely! and in time to enjoy this fall.
Of COURSE you get extra credit for a big quilt! Queen size is a major accomplishment. It's gorgeous, Cynthia! Congrats and Attagirl!! :)
That is a beautiful quilt, and I'm so glad you are keeping it! Yay for you! You are also correct, that it takes time to get write and create the text, so good for you asking for a small fee. What a great way to end the week with a finish like that!
That turned out super, love the setting you used! I wish I had the creative juices that flow through you to make the blocks and come up with a unique setting.
Bonus points indeed! I love how this turned out! The ripple effect really grabs your attention. It does take an enormous amount of time to write a pattern! Maybe one day when you have nothing on the wall(s) you could write a proper pattern, but for now a basic one is just fine! And I know you will never have bare design walls!
What an amazing scrappy quilt. What a great idea to use your scraps to make blocks over time.
Cynthia, I love the layout you selected! What a great bowtie quilt! I’m getting ready to sew all mine together and was just thinking random placement. Now I’ll have to give it a rethink. Beautiful quilt - congrats!
SO PRETTY! Thanks for the instructions and the layout diagrams. I just downloaded it and it will go in my "To-Do" Notebook!
Gorgeous! Love the layout and the colour work!

Congrats on a very fun and colorful finish!
That is a neat layout. I like that it's a bit asymmetrical. And it's fun to see how different it looks with the darker background.
Oh how splendid to see your Kaffe Bowtie all finished!! I'm pleased you're keeping it for yourself, it really is a beauty. Congratulations!!
Congrats on the great finish.
I love this layout too. The bright fabrics give it even more movement. And yes, extra points for big quilts.
