A Practical Thing and Some Pretty Quilts

Here is my finish for the week.  Can you guess what it is?

Here is a bit of a back story.  For years now, I have been trying to minimize the amount of garbage I create.  And I have to say, this covid business can sure challenge that goal.

The last time I went to the grocery store, I didn't want to use a single use sanitizing wipe (or trust that they were previously wiped down well), so I grabbed a clean hand towel from home to wrap around the handle of the cart.

Well, I have another trip planned to the store and this time, I thought I would make a cover I could wrap around the handle and then take it home and toss it in the wash.

I knew I had some pre-quilted candy cane fabric I bought long ago for some crafty item.  I used an empty toilet paper roll to get the size correct and grabbed some Velcro bits to close it all up.  I dug through my leftover binding bits for a piece that was long enough and got to sewing.  Because I figured I would someday accidently leave this behind, I didn't really care if it won any beauty awards.

It worked wonderfully!

If you don't have Velcro, you could use any kind of closure you want.  You could easily add ties, a button loop system or maybe snaps.  Just dig though your supplies and see what you have.  I would just make it easy to attach or if you have to struggle to get it on, you kind of defeat the purpose of the cover.

I might have to make one or two more of these.  I think in the future, it will always be a good idea to protect oneself.

Now onto to some happy things, I received this photo of a Spin! quilt someone made using my pattern.  It looks fantastic!
She pulled all the fabric from her scraps and existing stash.  Yay!

Here is one in progress - love those rich brown tones!

And I received this one of a Geese Migration quilt.  Isn't it wonderful!

I really miss teaching these two classes and spending the day with other quilters!!
Hopefully someday soon....

Have a Happy Friday!

Congratulations! I believe you've just invented the next best thing after the mask. I'll be making one this weekend for sure. ;^)

That is so smart! It also takes the fear out of touching cart handles, one less thing you have to worry about. Having a few on hand makes total sense! Such a great idea!

What a great idea for the grocery cart! At first I thought it was a cover to go over the shoulder strap seat belt. I need one of those for the truck and for the ATV. Very cute quilts from your patterns.

That is definitely a handy finish! I have been feeling guilty about adding more trash to the landfill during this time, too. Fun to see other people's versions of your patterns - I really love Geese Migration!

Great idea, who would have thought of this. I can see lots of these being whipped up all over the world. As you say, certainly needed now, and in the future when the bugs have returned to normal coughs and colds.
Can you give some idea of the size please? About 12 to 15 inches wide perhaps?

Very smart idea, Cynthia! I can think of lots of ways to attach a cover but the very idea of a washable cart handle cover never occurred to me.

How fun to see more of your patterns out in the wild! That must be so gratifying to you :)

Great idea! Here's hoping you hang on to it for many trips. I would absolutely forget and leave it behind, I'm sure.
