Oh Scrap! : Bright and Scrappy

 I really can't believe how fast last week flew by.  I felt somewhat in control on Monday and then before I knew it - It was Friday!  

And I feel like I don't have a lot to show for it!

I did get quite a few flannel and RWB scraps cut this week.  I was going to share my progress today, but they are buried somewhere on my dining room table.  So, I guess we will just share some bright and happy scrappy quilts that are ready to go out and provide comfort.

This quilt top was sent in by Kristi.  I might have to start cutting my solid scraps into 2.5" x 4.5" rectangles so I can recreate something similar.  

Nann sent in the backing and Wanda finished it up for us.

This bright scrappy star quilt top was sent in by Mina.  I love how the stars are brightly framed and then staggered across the quilt.  I have been wanting to have a block drive with a more involved block - maybe this is a candidate.

This fun quilt top was sent in by Nancy.  This is another block that I thought might be a block drive candidate.  Maybe Spring of 2027 - I have so many block layout ideas in my head.

Oh Scrap! : Some Scrappy Finishes

 I got myself all tucked into bed Saturday night and realized I forgot to write the Oh Scrap! post.

See how important all of you are to me?....

I didn't really do any scrap quilting this week so I guess you will have to settle on seeing some scrappy quilt tops sent in by others.

Local quilter Chris put together this fun quilt top.  She just pulled some scraps and started with whatever sized square she had and then framed it out to 6.5" square.  I think this lime green backing came from Kristin.  We have had it for quite some time - it was waiting for just the right quit.

I don't remember ever sharing this fun scrappy quilt.  I love it!  I think it was made by Kristi and the backing was sent in by Karen.  It is such a great way to use up those skinny strings.

I think Kristi also sent in this quilt top.  My notes say they are slab blocks but now I realize these are probably the original potato chip block.  The 12.5" squares are made from 2.5" x 4.5" rectangles.  A big thanks to local longarm quilter Sherry for finishing it up.

Oh Scrap! : Scrappy UFO

 I haven't been doing any teaching since I started Many Hands and Many Hearts but sometimes, I still get to see a finish that I inspired.

About 10 years ago, I taught a scrappy class here in Eugene.  I called it Bit by Bit and it was choosing colors and then sewing slab blocks in all sorts of sizes.  At the end you sewed the big slabs into a quilt top. Chris recently finished her quilt top and donated it to MHMH and we were able to quilt it and get it finished.

It is so much fun to see what student make - even if it did take them a decade.

Don't let this back fool you.  Four of those strips are actually all one fabric.  I just added the turquoise to bring in the turquoise from the front.  I think Wanda did the beautiful quilting on it.

I love this method of scrap sewing - just grabbing bits and mindlessly sewing them together.  One of these days I hope to get another opportunity to sew like that...

Oh Scrap! : It's Never Dull

 It is never dull around here at Many Hands and Many Hearts.  I tried all last week to get a few things put away to clear off some workspaces.  There always seems to be quilts needing labels or bindings, scraps needing cut or items waiting to be checked in and receipts written.  

It is a bit like Whack-a-Mole. 

I did get quite a bit of cutting done this week.  I pulled all the small pieces of florals and autumn-colored prints for a sew day project this fall. I will let you know at a later date what we are making.  I am also still cutting 2.5" RWB strips out of scraps for Veteran blocks.

But as fast as I cut, more scraps seem to appear!

Kristin's courier came to Eugene this week, so I had quite a few items to check in and put away.  She sent 25 quilt tops with backing and binding fabric this time!  That girl has been busy!!  She also sent a big pile of quilt kits (with all the fabric cut) for our volunteers to sew together and some bags of batting.  As usual, Arthur was supervising the project nearby.

I have a friend showing up next week to help me move some furniture around and sew up some backing for some of the quilt tops that have been sent in. 

There is never a dull moment around here!

Oh Scrap! : Flannel Scraps

 Whenever I find myself with a few minutes, I try and cut or sew some of the flannel scraps around this place.   This week, I actually finished another quilt made from those efforts.

I am still cutting all my flannel into 4.5" x 2.5" rectangles.  Right now, I am pairing a light with a dark and creating these windmill blocks.  I had enough dark pink blocks to finish this one into a 40" x 48" quilt.  I still have a few more pinks to cut and sew but there should be a slightly bigger quilt finished soon from the  medium pinks.

The backing for this one was from the hoard of flannel fabric Kristin sent us.  Thanks!

Even though I am continually cutting and sewing these scraps, sadly Mt Flannel is continuing to grow. At least, I think the warm summer will minimize the amount of flannel scraps we make.  I might just need to get a team of volunteers together one day and tackle it!

Oh Scrap! Love them Leftovers

 Well, I didn't get any finish posts out this week.  It doesn't surprise me because this is the week I prepare for the MHMH board of directors meeting and that takes up huge chunks of time.  Plus, we are already starting to receive blocks from the newest block drive. Lots to process!

I did, however, put aside some time to do a bit of sewing.  We received some tubs of fabric and tucked inside one of them was a partial jellyroll.  It looked like it was leftover from a project.  I did some quick calculations, pulled a few fabrics that matched from the stash and started making some 10" strip blocks.

I was able to come up with 20 blocks which made a 40" x 50" little quilt.  This used up every bit of the strips which made me very happy!  Thanks, Diane, for the strips!

On the back. I used this bright yellow print from Karen.  From a distance, it doesn't make much sense, but I promise there is yellow in the quilt top.  

It was nice to do a bit of sewing that wasn't a binding or a backing. 

 I need to do more of it!
