Triangle Quilt Progress

If you would have asked me last week how far I would get on my Sassy Triangle Quilt, I would have said I'd be lucky to have a single row sewn together!  There has been just so much on my plate lately, I thought it would be unlikely I would get much sewing done.

But it is amazing what a couple of late night sewing binges can do!
(I apologize for the colors in these photos.  These colors are so difficult to capture and it truly is the wee hours of the morning!)

I think I was initially hung up on trying to come up with a creative layout.  First I tried stars then I spent quite a bit of time trying to come up with a chevron pattern. But every layout had me wanting to pull in more colors or fabrics and I really wanted to use up what I had in front of me.

I finally realized I was making this quilt harder than it needed to be. I quickly pulled the triangles from my design wall and sorted them into two identical stacks. (This is a trick I use to evenly distribute fabrics on a quilt - one stack for the top half and one for the bottom half.) Well, within a few minutes I had the triangles laid out randomly on my design wall.

Worried it would take days and days to sew this up, I thought I had better spend an evening sewing.  Before I knew it, I had all 10 rows sewn up and I'm now ready for the next step.

The quilt should end up to be about 58 x 65".  I am hoping I can piece together the remaining yardage for the backing.

I will be happy when the top gets sewn up next week so I can get some good outdoor photos of these colors.  It really is a fun quilt with some unexpected colors that really work well together.

I was a little nervous I would have problems sewing the triangles. Did I starch my fabrics? Nope! Did I do any pinning? Not me!

But I was happy to see my vintage Bernina 830 was up to the task and sewed these triangles perfectly! Man I love my sewing machine!

Layout looks great! I do the same thing, typically make the layout stage WAY harder than it needs to be :) Thanks for the tip on separating the blocks into two stacks - brilliant!!!

I too have a habit of making things harder than they need to be! And no pins for this girl either. I love the final scrappy look!!! :)

Glad I was not the only one who did not use starch or pins. So far so good!
Your quilt is going to be fabulous.

Looks great! I agree on the outdoor photos. I've been trying to get some all week, but no luck yet.

I really like the random placement, it is perfect! (Of course a Zelda tri-force would be pretty cool too!)

The design you ended up with looks kinda like 52-Card Pickup - perfect.
Wouldn't a design wall be nice? I like those colors.

I am very guilty of making things harder than they need be. That logical left side of my brain fights the right side all the time! I also struggle with the concept of random versus balance and it looks like your sorting tip solution is a good compromise between both. I will try that. I have one of those whack and stack projects that has been in my closet for forever (http://dianeloves2quilt.blogspot.com/2011/10/mask-quilt.html) because I am over-thinking it. I really think your triangle quilt is striking. It is an unlikely color combination that works very, very well. And congratulations on sticking to your resolve to not introduce more fabrics. That is such a temptation, When I do that I use just a bit of several fabrics and a generate lots of more scraps to manage or the quilt grows to gargantuan size! As to your machine ... sorry... but I am a Pfaff girl through and through.

I love your version of the triangles quilt. I have been wanting to make one but I have always thought that they would be too difficult. I have to try one this year.

Love the triangles and the colors are wonderful. I can't wait to see the colors in natural day light, I bet it's beautiful!

You blow me away with how fast and how much you accomplish!! AND you blog about it too! AND come up with new quilt designs. AND quilt for others! I need to know your secrets... I plan to hop in with your scrap quilts once I'm back "up north" with my stash. Will let you know what I accomplish! Nowhere near the amount you do... Love reading your blog.

I do like the random layout. I'm in the not-sewed-a-row stage :)

I love it Cynthia! The random layout is perfect, thanks for sharing the technique for mixing it up. I think this quilt goes together fast once you get the layout down. I do a lot of my sewing at night too and hate how hard it is to get a decent pic, yours look good!
