Oh Scrap! : Marci's Blocks

This week was a bit crazy!  I received two giant boxes filled with all sorts of goodies.  These usually take me a while to get everything all checked in and put away.  My living room floor is about the only place I have to work now so things were a shambles for a few days.  

Not complaining....but I didn't have time to play with any scraps.

But today I did get a big box from Marci filled with her scrappy blocks.  This time she sent four different versions of layouts.  So I did get to pet a bunch of scraps and I decided I love them all!

She made some scrappy Happy Blocks and a new layout for her 10.5" blocks.  She definitely uses every bit of her scraps!  Both of these are new layouts so now my mind is thinking of creative ways to use them.

She also included some old favorites.  A huge stack of 10.5" squares and some of her 6.5" x 8.5" slab blocks.  Both of these we have had in the past and I can't wait to get them sewn up into quilt tops.  I just need to rally some of my volunteers!

I love that we are able to make and deliver so many different types of quilts - from very scrappy to meticulously planned.  This helps to ensure everyone gets the perfect quilt for them!

FYI - I did dig out all the scrappy projects I have in the works and piled them all on the floor.  I think there were a total of fourteen - Yikes!  Hopefully now that they are no longer buried, I can tick them off the list at a faster pace.  Wish me luck!

Oh Scrap! : Some Progress

I have way too many scrap/orphan block projects in the works right now.  I decided I need to get some of these finished before I can start anything new.

These scrappy blocks have been on my mind lately. They were made from a bunch of 2" HSTs that we received in the mail.  There are not enough blocks to make a traditional quilt so I am going to have to get create with how I lay them out.

I did finally decide to use this cream background fabric.  My plan is to lay them out in some a symmetrical way.  Once I picked my background, I knew the blocks were really going to look a bit dull.

I played with a lot of colors, but I settled on framing each block in this cornflower blue.  These strips will make a 1" frame.  I think that might be a bit too bit so I might trim them down a tiny bit and make them 3/4" or less.  Most of the blocks are now completed.  Hopefully this week I can get them set into the background fabric and one scrap quilt top will be finished!

Oh Scrap! : Scrappy Finishes

My week got away from me, and I didn't post any finishes.  So, I thought I would share some recent scrappy "treasures" I found around my house.  I have decided they can all go to Many Hands and Many Hearts.  Seeing them did make me miss digging through scraps.  So I spent a bit of time putting together some future scrap quilts - I can't start on them yet but I am hoping to soon!

This one really isn't a recent finish.  I have been going through all of my quilts that have never been used and decided it was time some went away.  Some of these were probably never shared with you before.  This zigzag quilt is the second one I made with black/white and royal blue.  I didn't even know this one was still in my house!

This is another one I found upstairs in a tub.  I have had this one hiding away for almost seven years.  We need a bigger stash of quilts for teenagers, and I think this one will fit the bill.

I also went through all the quilts I have around here made from my patterns.  This one I made using my Well Suited pattern.  It is time it finds a new home too.

It feels good to move these scrappy quilts out of my life and let them bring comfort to someone else.

Finally some Finishes

We finally got some photos of some quilts taken.  Time to share them with you...

My friend Karen wanted to burn through some of her batik scraps so she made three quilt tops out of squares with some vertical solid strips - each a different color.  This one is the purple one. (The other two are blue and green.)  We were finally able to use some of this gray, purple and yellow backing fabric we have had for eons.  I think Deana picked it up from an estate.  Local quilter Laura quilted and bound it.

Denice sent us this fun little quilt top made from HSTs.  I got a little crazy with the quilting.  But it works with the pattern and the prints on the front.

This is another top that Denice sent to us.  How sweet are those pinwheels sent in that yellow?!

This one has the same backing as the first quilt.  In total, I think I quilted 5 quilt tops all on one big long backing fabric.  It makes the quilting of these small quilts go so much faster!

Jean sent in this colorful quilt top.  I guess you would call it a 12 patch.  This quilt will be perfect for a teen.  I think it is already in the pile to get delivered next week.  Jean also sent in this backing already pieced - I love when that happens!

 

Hey, it is a split 4-patch.  But this one did not come from the block drive - Kristin sent in the top and backing.  I love the diagonal design she created.

We still have a LOT of split 4-patch blocks to assemble but we have been meeting our current quilt needs from tops coming from others, so they are just sitting on the shelf until we need them. 

 With our big holiday push right around the corner, I am thinking that will be soon.

I will hopefully be sharing more on Friday.

We received a big shipment of finished quilts so I want to make those a post of their own.  

They are all so amazing!

It's the Weekend!

It has been another busy week.  Next Wednesday is a board meeting so it is always a lot of work getting ready for those.  

But the quilts keep crossing the finish line!

We are finally close to having all of these Jewel Box quilts completed.  I think there are just four more tops that need quilting.

Jeanne sewed up these blocks into a quilt top.  I love seeing all the colors in one quilt.  Nann sent in this lovely fabric that was perfect for the back.  I don't remember how many quilts we expected from this block drive but I am pretty sure we will be exceeding expectations!

Julie sent in this quilt top and backing not too long ago.  I love Kaffe Fassett fabrics so I was excited to see it finished.  The colors are so vibrant!

Are Happy quilts only for kids?  I don't think so.  Check out this farm themed quilt top sent in by McGill.  She also sent in a barn panel that she might have wanted us to use on the back.  But we are hoping to turn that into a quilt later.  Jean sent in this fruit themed fabric that was perfect for the backing.

And finally, we have this super scrappy top made by Elizabeth.  Nann sent us this backing fabric and local quilter Laura finished up the quilt.

Oh Scrap! Snowballs

This week, I finished all 99 snowball blocks for a Many Hands and Many Hearts donation quilt.

 I laid the blocks out on the floor and then picked them up and stacked them so I can sew them up into a quilt top sometime in the future. Right now, I am sewing up some Jewel Box blocks so the snowballs have to wait. We have just a few more tops to make and we will be done with the Jewel Box block drive, so that is the priority right now.

It is time to come up with the next scrap quilt for Many Hands and Many Hearts. Someone suggested bow tie blocks - I might just have to see if I have fabrics that inspire me.

Another Week - More Quilts

Tomorrow, it is time to make a delivery of Compassion Quilts to the hospital.

We are already working on next month's order!

I was happy to see this lovely scrap quilt in the pile to photograph today.  It proves to me I CAN make a nice scrap quilt.  All of these florals were all leftovers from previous quilts.  Mari sent in the backing fabric and local quilter Terry quilted it up for us.

Board President Penny made this Split 4-patch quilt top.  She has been busy using up a bunch of fall colored fabrics in her stash.  I think this might be the last one to be shared.  She also donated the backing fabric.  A huge thanks to Kelly for quilting it up for us.

Kelly also quilted up this fun string quilt I put together.  Some of the blocks are mine and some were donated.  I think I have enough blocks to make one more.  Elizabeth sent in the red star backing.

We received a package from Cheryl this week and it contained a couple of finished quilts.  I adore this little slanted heart design.  Plus, it is flannel, so it is super snuggly.  

Cheryl also sent this lovely patchwork quilt.  It too has flannel.  We set these aside for our big kid quilt donation later this fall.  We need to start working on those deliveries now!

And finally, we have finished another Jewel Box quilt.  Janet created a really cool design using both color and layout.  Holly sent in the fabric we used on the back.  It has tiny little letters on it.

That is it for today.  I think 6 quilts in half a week is pretty good!  And we certainly couldn't do it without all the Many Hands and Many Hearts that work together to make these Compassion Quilts happen.  Thanks so much!
