I often get asked where I find the inspiration for my scrap quilts. There are times I see something out on the internet that I want to try, but most of the time, the scraps littered around my sewing room are what drives my next project.
As I was tidying up this morning, I re-discovered a bunch of navy solid strips I had incorrectly cut for a past project. Rather than toss them into a scrap bin where I knew they would get all frayed, I decided just to start a new scrap quilt.
The solid strips were mostly cut at 1.5" wide. Digging in my blue color bin (which is overflowing), I saw that there were a number of 2.5" strips. So I decided to chop up the prints into pieces that are 9.5" long. Why 9.5"? It was the width of the square ruler I was using and it also was a good size for the chunks scraps I had.
Trying to use the cut sizes you already have gives you the best yield on your scraps and reduces the amount of cutting for the quilt. Always look at what you have and come up with a way to use them as they are cut. :)
I did not bother to cut up the navy strips to length. Instead, I just chained pieced the prints right onto the long strip. I trimmed them to size after they were sewn and pressed.
Now I have a bunch of these pretty blue strips to play with. I did find some other solids in my scrap bin that were close to the navy color. I just added those into the mix too. I think it just enhances the charm of a scrap quilt.

I agree with that scrap process, use what you have to it's fullest potential with something that minimizes time spent in the whole process. Curious to see what you do with these.

I always enjoy seeing what you do with scraps. That's such a great/logical mindset, try to use what you've already got cut. It also means that all those math teachers were right... you will use that math again after the school days are over!

That's pretty much the way I've been working lately, trying not to put away scraps but find ways to upcycle them into another quilt right away. Cleaning up also inspires. Putting away some orphan block packages yesterday I came up with 4 more quilts!
I always love seeing what you come up with using scraps! I tend to use nearly every last scrap I have from a project as soon as possible. Which is why I seem to have three or four projects in a row using the same color combination! I'm excited to see this navy quilt!
So smart NOT to put those dark blues into the scrap box . . . and I really like how you are using them.

I need to try this philosophy with all the little leftover triangles I seem to accumulate. And I've actually started some crumb blocks using the little scraps from a string quilt I'm working on.
