Simple Starts

Now that I am making quilts to donate to my local hospital, I have been looking around my sewing room for some simple starts for future quilts.  One of the first ideas I came up with was making some 16 patch blocks.

I cut my binding at 2.5" wide and I always save any leftover pieces in a scrap bin just for them.  I have been using a lot of striped bindings lately and I thought they would make some really happy blocks.

I am pairing them with some white/low volume scraps.  I also pulled some other bright colors to see how they looked.

I am not in any hurry to finish these blocks.  I can just work on them as I find fabric scraps that will work.  I might make one quilt - I might make many quilts out of these blocks.
Only time will tell :)

Today I received my first few donation blocks in the mail.  It was so exciting!

The response has been amazing and I am so happy I am going to be able to share a bunch of different layout ideas for such a simple block.  I have the first quilt from my blocks almost completed and I already have almost enough blocks to start on the second.

Thanks so much for the support!

Another Colorful Finish

I am definitely starting this year out with a bunch of colorful finishes.  This week I have another scrappy quilt made with my Kaffe Fassett fabrics.

For this quilt I used mostly warm colored scraps.  I chopped them all into 4.5" wide strips and just started sewing.

I pulled a cantaloupe colored background piece I bought at Connectng Threads last year.  I looked to see if they still have it but couldn't find it.  They always have lots of Blenders to choose from and rotate the patterns often.

This design is one of my Scrap-A-Pallooza designs.  I have made it quite a few times over the year.

With all the floral prints, I decided to quilt it with some daisy chain quilting.  It is whimsical and makes me smile.  It is actually the same way I quilted my personal quilt in this design - I use it almost every day!

I dug through my Kaffe Fassett Collective stash and found a few bigger pieces that I could use as a backing.  This jungle print has always been a favorite of mine.

If you are a Kaffe Fassett fan, you might want to check out the prints currently on sale at Connecting Threads. Or if you don't have a lot of scraps but love this quilt, you can get a Jelly Roll here on sale and make something similar. His fabrics are always so rich in color!

I still have lots of Kaffe Fassett scraps and more pieces of his in my stash so I have been thinking a lot about the next quilt.  I have an idea forming but I am making myself finish a few other projects before I can start anything.  I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the projects going on right now!

Enjoy your weekend Eveyone.
I think we are supposed to get some snow soon (blech) so I will be busy protecting some plants in my yard.  I live in Oregon because we don't get snow....😡

Oh Scrap! : Kaffe Scraps

I have been busily sewing away on my Kaffe Fassett scraps.

I have been sewing up all the warmer colors into these colorful strips.  I thought I would go back and make one of my Scrap-A-Palooza designs.  I haven't made one of those in a long time!

The next step will be to add in the vertical sashing.  I still plan on using a light cantaloupe color.

If you read my initial post, you know I sorted my Kaffe scraps into warm and cool colors.  After sewing all the strips together, I still have a number of the warm scraps.  Hmmm....

So I also decided to start sewing the cooler colored scraps.  I started with a red scrap and then using improv piecing, I randomly sewed on some strips.  I trimmed the blocks down to 8.5" square.  I already have about 30 blocks completed.  I will most likely add some sashing but I haven't decided what fabric to use.

After finishing both of these quilts, I will still have quite a few scraps left.  I have been sorting out some of the pastel shades so maybe I will make a third scrap quilt.

I am always amazed at how far a pile of scraps go!

Oh Scrap! : Something New

I decided to try and squeak out one more scrap quilt before the end of the year.  I can start and finish a lap quilt in under two weeks...Right?

So with hands on hips, I looked around my sewing room for inspiration.  I saw my bin of Kaffe Fassett scraps hiding under my cutting table and decided to start there.  My first task was to sort my scraps into warm and cool colors.

Oh boy...there are probably at least three quilts here!

I decided to start with the warm colors.  Most of the scraps were narrow strips so I decided to chop them up into 4.5" widths.  I didn't worry too much about the height.  I just made sure it was straight.

Then I started sewing them into strips.  I also tracked down a background fabric.  I think I am going to use this soft orange I ordered from Connecting Threads. I have a two yard cut so that should be more than enough.

Now I just need to find some time to sew....

Hand2Help Quilt Finish

Happy May Day!
When I was a young girl I used to always love making paper baskets and filling them with flowers to leave on neighbors' doors.

I should think about starting that tradition up again one of these years!

But today I am sharing the first of two Hands2Help donation quilts.
I made it using one of my Scrap-A-Palooza quilt techniques - it is made from leftover 2.5" binding strips.  I focused on oranges, red, and pinks paired with blues and purples.

I didn't have quite enough 2.5" strips so I pulled some fabrics from the scrap bins.  Rather than cut the scraps up small, I made some larger four patches to mix in with the rest of the blocks.

I used one of the backing I purchased from Connecting Threads and played around with a swooping quilting  pattern.

It is happy and colorful and hopefully will brighten someone's day!

I still want to make at least one more Hands2Help quilt so I need to dig through my sewing room to see what I can come up with.

Hopefully I get started on something this weekend!

Cleaning out the UFOs

I feel like I am making great progress finishing up my list of UFOs.  Right now, I have them worked down to just 16!  That sounds like a lot but I will always be one of those quilters that always has a lot of projects on the go.  My goal is to get the list down to about 12.

I think I started the blocks for this quilt back in early 2017.  I had a bunch of vegetable fabric I had started making an apron out of in about 2014.  I failed miserably at the apron and stuffed the whole project deep into a cupboard.  I decided to play around with the fabric and turn it into an improv scrappy quilt.

All of the blocks have a fussy cut vegetable in the center and each scrap is completed in improv style using scraps.

It was fun playing with each individual block.  I tried my best to weave in more of the vegetable fabric to use it up.

My favorite block is probably the one with the fan-dancing carrot in it.

I used the background fabric as I constructed the blocks, which makes it look like fabrics are floating in the background.

On the back, I used a fun green print I had purchased at Connecting Threads.  I was hoping it was one of the ones on sale as I have used up everything I had.
But it looks like they no longer have it in stock.

And I should note that the completion of this quilt was my February APQ UFO Challenge quilt.
I met my goal but I just didn't have any internet access to write about it.

That means I have already finished up two UFOs this year.  THAT makes me so very happy!

A Scrappy Kaffe Finish

And the finishes keep coming!

I needed my design wall cleared for another quilt, so I finished up my Kaffe Scrap quilt.

I tried to get some indoor photos but I don't have a space big enough in my house to get the whole quilt in one photo.  So here is the top half...

And here is the bottom half.
I ended up using a faded chambray fabric I had picked up at Connecting Threads on sale.  It was an extra wide backing so I didn't need to piece the long strips.

I quilted vertical squiggly lines and swirls. Fast and Simple - especially on a longarm.

I used up some older stash pieces on the back.  The purple and brown floral is across the center with the giant swirls at the top and bottom of the quilt.

That big floral has been cherished for a long time but it was just too perfect for this quilt.
And...I am determined to use the fabric I have!

One of my friends showed up so I was able to snap a quick outdoor photo.
It is really rainy and blustery today so we had to be quick!

This design is one of my Scrap-A-Palooza designs and I have to say, it is one of my favorites.
It sure looks pretty made from these Kaffe Fassett scraps.

APQ UFO Challenge for February

On the tail of my successful UFO finish for January, I am hoping to keep up my momentum.

The number six was drawn for February.  Which means my Veggie Improv project will hopefully get finished this month. (Remember this one?!)

I was happy to see this project get chosen.  So many UFOs on my list, I know I am going to dig in and drag my feet on finishing.  But this one has all the blocks completed and I just need to sew the blocks together.

I even have the background fabrics....so there is really nothing stopping me!

If you want to read more about the event, you can do so here.
If I can finish half of the twelve items on my list by year's end, I am going to be one happy girl!
