To celebrate Independence Day yesterday, I grabbed a bag of patriotic scraps and continued working on my red, white and blue string quilt.
I put all of the larger cuts aside with the idea to use them in the backing. The leftover bits, I cut into strings and started making some 6" blocks. I mixed them up with some low volume strings so I had enough to yield 36 blocks. I wanted to use them as an outer border.
I will be using these with the red and blue string blocks I made for this year's RSC project. I have three options for layouts. Feel free to weigh in on your favorite!
Option #1
Option #2
Option #3
The red, white and blue blocks will frame around the red blocks. I will finish it off with a blue binding. This project should eliminate another bag of scraps from my sewing room! Yay!

Hi, your title grabbed me. I am impressed with your string quilt. I especially like option 3, not that you asked. And, I am also impressed that you used up a bag of scraps. I keep using mine but the total quantity never seems to decrease. It is a happy conundrum. Nice blog.
Love #2 because it seems like a center medallion. Love your string blocks. Great work!
I vote option #3...it's symmetry appeals to me.Can hardly wait too see you finish! You are a Quilting Inspiration...I love all your scrap ideas!
Ooo! Pretty! I like option two because of that secondary big blue diamond it creates. Beautiful string blocks!
Dang, I was favoring #3 'til I saw Janice's comment about #2. It will be nice either way.
I agree with the aforementioned posts: 2 looks best for the secondary designs. You have to look for it, but that is great. 3 does look good, too.
I really like your quick and easy project. So 4th of July!
I'm liking option #3...the focus is on the center.
How fun! I like the way the different size blocks give you some different options for the layout. Can't really say which one I preferred because I saw things to like about all of them! The red, white, and blue border blocks will really give it a pretty outline.
I prefer option 3. Like the string work.
Tough decision. I think I like option 1 the best. I love how the blue is in the center, framed by the red. Your outer boarder is going to look amazing. I feel a string quilt in my future.
I was really undecided until I looked at how the blue blocks played with the red. I think I like option 2 because of how the red continues the secondary diamond shapes. But they're all striking!
Either #1 or #3 would be my choice, because #2 seems to have two eyes looking at me! You make such balanced, pretty string blocks, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished quilt.
Option 2 is my pick, love how the four centre blue blocks make one large block. Thanks for linking to Sew Stitch Snap Share.
Option #3. I love your string blocks.
They are all awesome! But I think I like #3 the best! :)
You're definitely on a string quilt roll - love the colours and I'm having trouble deciding between Option 2 or Option 3. Actually, looking at both again I think I like Options 2 best of all.
I am glad not to be making the final decision!!!! No help but whatever way you go it will be a beauty.
I like option #1 with the star. They all look good though.
I like 3 and 2 and 1 LOL but 3 seems to strike me the most. beautiful quilt using up strings. looks great
I like layout 1 but it doesn't look like a popular one. I love string blocks
#2 has my vote. Now I'm going to have to go string bucket diving to create one of my own! Thanks for the inspiration!
I can't pick a favorite but I wanted to say I LOVE these layouts!!! Thanks for the inspiration.
Option one for me!
option 3 for me.
Oh 3 3 3 !!! I like it!!and its graphically cool!!! Love all your strings - need some more????? ha ha
I can't pick a favorite. Obviously you're going to have to make three quilts... 8)
Option 2 was immediately my fav. It's unique and that secondary design is striking!
I really like option #3. Congrats on making even a small dent in your strings.
I was immediately drawn to #3.
Loved all of them but partial to Option #2. Thanks for the ideas!
Fantastic string blocks! I prefer Option 1 and Option 3...oh, and Option 2 is pretty snazzy, too. I guess I'm not very helpful, am I? Have a great day! --Andrea
I love the low volume added to those red and blue strings! They are making some beautiful blocks. I initially liked option #2, but then I changed my mind to option #1. I see your difficulty in choosing a layout. They are all great. :)
All are wonderfully creative! In order of how I liked them...#1, #3, #2.
I like option 3--depending on where one focuses, there are interesting secondary designs.
#3 is my favorite. I think if you wanted it to be more patriotic then #1 would do the job because it has a star center. I love string piecing! Congratulations on finishing up another bag of scraps.
I love #2 the best because it rather reminds me of a firework or medallion. #3 is my least favorite, feeling a bit more ordinary. Whatever you decide on, it's going to be another stellar quilt!
It is amazing the different looks you get from rotating the blocks. I think #1 is my favorite because I like the star.
As I read each comment I scrolled back to look at each layout again. And each time my eye focused on another part of the quilt. Interesting! They all have wonderful eye candy! I too like #3, maybe just a tiny bit better that the other two. All amazing!
Hard to say. All layouts have something good about them. I'm sure you'll find just the right one. The red, white and blue strings sound like a good way to finish thing off.
I love all the layouts. You could choose any of them and it will look great!
What beautiful ideas--all of them!
I like option 1 because it shifts between a star pattern and outward movement that echos the red string pattern. The border will be perfect.
