Many of the quilts I make for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge I end up donating. Because they come mostly from scraps, they have very little affect on my pocketbook and it makes me feel good being able to give them away. I usually choose fairly easy blocks that help me burn through whatever type of scrap I am focused on.
I designed up this block that used 2.5" squares and 2.5" strips of black fabrics. Each month I could easily pull the squares from my precuts and the dark sashing cleaned out some older blacks I have been wanting to purge. The block was super easy to sew and took almost no time at all to sew each month.
In fact, they went together so easily, I already find myself with a finished quilt half way through the year. It measures about 50 x 60" and I plan on donating it to a local kid's charity.
I now have a stack of bright, scrappy quilts ready to be delivered. I might have to do this pattern again in the future with maybe a different solid for the sashing.
I had a bright striped backing in my stash already that worked perfectly.
I shared my next RSC blocks here...I look forward to the new color in July so I can start working on them!

it looks good - such a easy way to use up your scraps and it looks good! Love the black in it
This is so sweet! I love how the bright colors pop!
I'm doing a similar quilt with strips instead of squares. I'm also using black. You're so great with color, what other colors would work best besides black? Need ideas for another scrappy quilt.
That is a really nice quilt - the dark rails really help set off the colors. And how generous of you to donate it!
You have such a great eye for putting scraps together. And who doesn't love creating something our of "nothing". Plus, that back is a fabulous choice here.
Many times simplest is best. Definitely worth doing again.
I would have a hard time giving this one away. It's going to be loved though...and that backing is perfect!
Another great quilt! I like the black sashings and then the great colorful backing. Perfect!
You have the best scrap quilt ideas! I love this one! I've never collected black and white fabrics, but this quilt is making me want to. :) Are the blocks 8 inches?
Great quilt! I love scrappy quilts and this one really works. Someone will love it. ~Jeanne
Really pretty design work on the quilt! Thanks for the ideas.
What a great way to use up scraps. I make quilt tops for a kid's charity and this will be an easy way to use scraps. I can make a few blocks at a time and when there is enough, sew them together. Thanks for sharing.
What a great quilt. It will be loved for sure.
Looks wonderful, well done indeed.
Thank you for the inspiration. I now know what I am going to use my pile of 2 1/2" squares for.
Such a fun bright quilt. It will be treasured. What color of thread did you quilt it with?
I just love this pattern- with 2.5" squares and strips. I might have to make a quilt like yours since I have the right scraps. Thanks for sharing!
Such a darling, happy quilt. I could totally see me (and lots of other RSC’ers) taking up this block for an RSC project!
Oooh, I love how that turned out!
What a fun and happy quilt. Some kid is going to be so happy to have it.
I am really liking this one and think I should start one!! Hmmm need more hours and energy in my days-story of our lives right?
That was a great idea. I like the way it turned out.
Great simple block and quilt. I can see making one for my local children's hospital.
What a great quilt!! you have the best ideas!!
very fun! how did you decide how many blocks to make for each color?
A beautiful bright quilt and the different black/white fabrics used is such a good idea.
Love this one so much!! It reminds me of a rainbow version of the checkerboard tile floor in a soda fountain/diner :)
I love this quilt! The colors and crisp white really pop against the black strips. Don't be surprised if you see variations of this popping up all over the internet. It's an idea I'm sure a lot of us scrap quilters will try.
What a great way to use up 4 patches. It turned out beautifully! Congrats on another fun scrappy finish.
It's been fun watching this one come together. It turned out great!
