Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2018 First Entry

I have been participating in the Blogger's Quilt Festival since 2013.  It is an event I look forward to every year.  I love to see all of the beautiful entries that are linked up and discover exciting new blogs to follow.

My first entry this Fall  is a fairly recent finish.  My regular readers know I love scraps.  I also love to use my scraps to play with color and create visual effects.  So when I saw Linda post about a block she was making playing with color value, I began wondering how much contrast you really need to visually see a shape.  This quilt became an obsession with me!

The blocks were fairly simple to assemble.  Just HSTs and squares at 2.5" so the block measures 8".  It became all about fabric placement.

I used a bag scraps given to me by a friend for this entire quilt.  I really enjoyed finding the right home for each bit of fabric.

I also incorporated some neutral solids in the background by floating them amidst the low volume background.

Some partial diamonds were placed around the edge to create a unique border.

I don't often allow myself to "just play" in my sewing room.  I always have a goal I want to meet and I usually only work on the projects that I have a clear direction on.  This quilt definitely reminded me that I learn more by deliberately moving through each step and analyzing how each fabric affects the whole quilt.  There will be many more projects like this one in the future!

If this is the first time you have visited my blog, I hope you will come back again.  Every Sunday I host a great linkup for other bloggers to share their scrappy projects.  There is lots of inspiration shared every week.

And I am always trying to share my process and lots of ways to use the fabric you have on hand.
I have far more ideas than I do time!

A giant thanks to Amy over at Amy's Creative Side for hosting this event.  I hope you take the time to head over and check out all the entries!

Just beautiful. You are right. It is the colors and value. But oh, how hard to get it all right so it sings like this!

I love the softness of this quilt - perfect for snuggling. And looking at all the fabrics you've used just delights the senses. Well done!

I truly love most of your designs, but this one speaks to me somehow! The colors ares so soft (not my usual), the design so modern(not my usual). I think I may have to "step outside my box"!

I was about to say what Judy said! This one is a favorite of mine! I would love to have been in your sewing studio and be able to watch and listen as you chose the scraps to use and where to put them in each block. Glad you entered this in the BQF so we could see it again!

Love both the "what if?" process you took with this one and the very beautiful finish! I too keep telling myself I need to once in a while give up the deadline projects for a "just play" one. Seeing this, reminds me again I need to try it one day!

Two words - Understated Elegance. Oh you want more? OK, I love how each block builds up from a light to medium to dark centers like an array of fountains spewing color. Look up Philadelphia City Hall Water fountains to see what I mean - in a symbolic way.
