Your Ideas Please

My sister volunteers at an animal shelter and they have a fundraising event coming up soon and I told her I would make her a quilt.  The date just keeps getting closer and I am still not firm on what quilt I should make.  I thought I would see if any of you have some good ideas.

I don't want to go buy more fabric!

Here are the fabrics that I want to use for the project.  I can still pull a few more pieces out of my stash like a dusty blue and maybe another gray or brown piece.

Most of these are half yard pieces or fat quarters.

I also have these two pieces that I can use as a background.  I have a yard of each.  I think this will give ma about a 50 x 60" quilt.

My initial idea was to make a raw edge circle quilt like this one.

I shared a tutorial on how I make these back in 2015.  I thought I could alternate the background fabrics and use the dog prints as the circle prints.

I don't really have a bunch of contrast in my fabrics to make some pieced blocks.  But I am curious if any of you have any ideas for how to use these.

Keep it simple please - I am running out of time!

Thread Sets

In my email this moring, I see Connecting Threads have put together some thread sets on their Essentials Thread.  I usually piece with my big cones I buy for my longarm, but I do like this thread.
They have put together some beautiful combinations!

I just found a pattern for a giant, one-block star that can be made from fat quarters, maybe plus some yardage... https://www.incolororder.com/2011/08/giant-vintage-star-quilt-tutorial.html
And my calculations tell me this will finish 68x68. I might be making this one tomorrow myself!

Do a google search of " There's a dog on my Quilt" The pattern is by Billie Lauder. I make it all the time, as gifts and for my local humane society fund raiser. It's pretty simple pattern to figure out. It's all squares and HST's. You can use your brown for the dog, but you'll need a black or 2nd contrasting brown for it also. you could use all your neutrals to do a neutral patchwork background, and your gray Adopt fabric will be perfect for the ball. I hope you find a pattern you like.

The "There's a Dog on my Quilt" pattern is adorable, but I also like your circle quilt! That one looks like it goes together quickly!

Something simple like a square in a square, mixing fabrics with darker and lighter backgrounds in each block?

I like your circles, but wonder if you will lose too much of the dog fabric details by cutting them that way.
Good luck with your deadline,

Lorna Mahon at Sew Fresh Quilts has a bunch of animal quilts, including dog quilts. If you make big blocks, you wouldn't need to make many of them. They are not paper pieced.

What about your Wiggle Time pattern? That would show off the dog prints nicely!

How about house blocks (I.e. doghouses) you could use a dark background for the light coloured dog prints, or frame them in a dark color.

I LOVE your circle quilt - that would be my first choice. I also like the square in a square suggested above by @susansquiltstudio

What a about a "Stairway to Heaven" quilt. Cat silhouettes on mostly neutral background. You would need some colors for the stairs.

I needed to make some quilting samples quickly. This pattern and it three variations are about 40" sq
good for a baby, wall hanging or table topper. You could add borders to enlarge.
It goes fast. Cut, sewed and quilted in one day.

How about simple equilateral triangles to feature the prints? If necessary you could add individual scraps from your stash for contrast. I like to cut triangles from 7" strips to finish at about 6" high. Fast, easy, and it's all about the cute prints.

What about a quick and easy "I Spy" with squares and sashings? That would showcase the animals beautifully...hugs, Julierose

Looking at your fabrics, I agree with your circle pattern choice!

These are all fun fabrics. I would do a simple diagonal of squares. Size related to the nicest use of the largest print? Then strip sew them. You can make the top in 2 hours!

I make for the cat shelter I support and the simplest ones with the animal fabrics get the most attention. An I spy is a great idea, give you the most bang for your buck. The one I made was all different fabrics, cats of course, and it was a great hit. I have quite a stash of cat fabrics.

Carol Dean Jones has a cute and easy doghouse pattern (log cabin style) in her book "A Rescue Quilt". In the book, the quilt guild makes that quilt as a raffle quilt to help fund an animal shelter.

That's a good question and you got some good answers here. Not a lot of variety to do an I Spy quilt but if you could manage some dark greys in there maybe a snowball quilt would be doable. It's quick, easy to assemble and it's interesting to see with good prints like yours. Plan B big 9-Patch blocks with cream sashing. Good luck. ;^)

I recently made a quilt following Louise's pattern here http://myquiltodyssey.blogspot.com/2019/12/fat-quarter-challenge.html

Works really well. Good luck with whatever you choose

I think your circle quilt pattern would be great! I can’t wait to see it finished, whatever you decide to do will be great. It’s for a wonderful cause too. Hugs,

I like very much the raw edge circle design!!! Not the usual pieced block quilt design. Different is good. Now I want to make one too!
