Sorry, I don't have any finished quilts to share this Friday. I spent most of my week like so many other quilters researching and sewing a few masks for my family.
It took my a couple tries to get the size and process down. I didn't have any 1/4" elastic so I carefully split some 1/2" flat elastic and it worked. It frays in some areas once it has been washed but that is fine on these first few masks.
The next batch of 11 went so much faster!
This next week is going to be the real test though.
Having just received a giant spool of elastic, I have 80 more masks to complete.
During these trying times, we all have to do what we have to do....
But I am going to be so happy to get back to making quilts!

I think you're the mask champion of the week! That kind of sewing (and the reason for it!) is really no fun at all. Hope you're back to your favorite kinds of projects very soon!

Are you following a pattern? Or making it up? I found a tutorial I like, but don't like how the sides (elastic) are finished. Would love to find an easier method. Happy Easter.
It's tough work emotionally more than practically, but how wonderful to have the skill to do it. Thinking of and praying for so many medical workers and unemployed.
Keep up the good work. I’ve been making mine with ties for lack of elastic. A little fiddlier, but makes a nice mask.

Gold stars on your forehead for your masks. 80? In one week? You go girl. I've been making the same general mask but with muslin ties. Which takes more time -- I'm prepping miles of 1.5" muslin into double folded, ironed and sewn ties. I'm still making some for neighbors and an ambulance transportation company but they are no longer my big focus. We'll see how long that lasts!

I'm also making a few for our little family. Since we're still on the move, I don't have a local place to donate any. And since I really don't like making them, I'm actually relieved about that! There will be a great need for comfort quilts in the future, so we'll all need to keep quilting :)
We are waiting on elastic to arrive for our masks. After tons of patterns flooding the internet, my daughter and I came up with a pleated one that has channels on the sides for the elastic. That way people can adjust the elastic to their comfort and hide the knot in the channel. It requires more elastic though! It's crazy we have to do this, but such a necessity!
Where did you find elastic? Amazon is saying June delivery!
I am amazed at all the quilters who had elastic. Cannot find it anywhere now an the ties take forever to make. Wishing you warp speed in the mask-making endeavors.
I just ordered clothesline rope and wire to make more masks of a different type I wanted to try. In the mean time, I will continue to sew up biased tape that was donated to me.
We are all a team working together!
Oh those look real nice. After you make the first few, it is much easier to get a production line going!
