A Summer Treat

August is probably my least favorite month - it is just too hot!

So when I saw chunks of this fabric in a big bag of scraps from a friend, all I could think about was keeping cool with ice cream.

For the last few weeks, I have been making yummy cones and an alternating quarter log cabin block from the various scraps.

Truthfully, I can't really decide if these are ice cream cones (like the chocolate chip one) or snow cones (I always wanted all the flavors).  I don't think I really need to make a decision - I like the variety!.

The cone blocks finished at 10" square so the alternate block was simply made from 2.5" strips.  I used up the rest of the "flavor" print and added in strips of the other flavors found throughout the quilt.  I even added in some background fabrics so that I used all of that up too.

I pulled a funky triangle print out of the stash for the backing and a solid dark gray was used for the binding.

If you want to read how I made the cone blocks, you can go here.  They are super easy if you have the right ruler.  I simply added two 2.5" strips of the background fabric to each side to make the block square.

I had just enough of the background fabric left to add some horizontal sashing to lengthen the quilt a bit.  The quilt finished at 50 x 60".  I think I started with  a 1.5 yard cut and wasn't sure how far it would go. This quilt was silly and entertaining to make.  I enjoyed the challenge of making sure all the text went the same way - I used almost every last scrap of every print!

A big thanks to my dear friend who gifted me a lot of these scraps.  Now back to the other projects that I need to finish up.  This was a fun distraction from the heat!

I'm sure it was a fun quilt to make because it is a fun quilt to look at. So cute. All from scraps! Imagine the lost if she had tossed it in the garbage?!! Congratulations on this refreshing beauty. ;^)

August may be hot but your quilts are so cool :-) I need to make sure I have enough ice-cream to see me through. Have a great weekend!

August has been too darn hot here, too! But your quilt finish is cute as can be! Love the alternate blocks and that backing, too. Fun finish, Cyndy!

Great little quilt! Somehow I never go to the free thinking quilts. I'm too stuck on patterns.

Absolutely adorable! Maybe it’s like an ice cream truck where both ice cream cones and snow cones are available.

Oh, how cute! I forgot I was going to make some cones after I saw you making them. So today I went and looked for some cone and ice cream fabrics and tomorrow I hope to make a few before I forget again. And I can't believe you have that text fabric oriented the same way. Extra bonus points and a smiley face for you!

Like ice cream, this quilt is just sweet as can be! I really like the way the background sides of the cone blocks work with the horizontal sashing to look like you individually sashed each block. You got that "floaty" look without as much piecing. Smart! :)

This is such a cute and fun quilt. It's a great pattern for a kid's quilt. Thanks for sharing this great design and instructions for the block.

This turned out to be such a fun quilt! Ice-cream or snow cones it doesn't matter! Either one is just as sweet as this quilt!

This is so fun! That fabric is really fun, and I say ice cream or snow cone--viewer's choice!

How fun! You definitely made good use of all those scraps, especially the cone fabric. Congrats on a very cool finish.

This is deliciously cute!! First thing I thought of with your alternate blocks is napkins! Exactly what is needed when eating an ice cream cone!
