Oh Scrap! : Scrap Block Preparation

I don't always have a lot of time during the week to sit and sew at my machine.  But I find myself time here and there to cut and pair up scrap bits to make future blocks.  I will move a small cutting mat into my kitchen, dining room or living space to cut block pieces as I work on other things.  I then stack these up next to my machine so that when I do sit down, I can be super productive.

Yesterday I was able to cut for the last blocks I need for some secret sewing.  Hopefully Sunday I can spend a few minutes knocking these blocks out.  Then I can get the top sewn together and maybe quilted next week.

Do you like to have a stack of prepared bits next to your machine?

It is now your turn to share what you are making with scraps.  Here are the details for linking up:

  • This linky party is for any scrappy project - It can be in-process or a finished piece.
  • You can link up your blog post (not your homepage please) or Instagram photo from the past week that features your use of scraps.
  • If you are linking to a blog post, I ask that you link back to my blog somewhere in your post. So if you are writing about scraps, just get into the habit of including a link as there will be a linky party available every week!
  • If you are using Instagram, please use the hashtag #ohscrap.
  • This is a party so remember to socialize and comment on the posts of others.
  • Following my blog is not necessary but it sure would be great if you do!

I see we will have some beautiful quilts to look at from the links shown - Happy New Year to you and hope it goes better than this year said...

Yes, I like to have a stack of fabrics next to my machine so that when I sit to sew I'm sitting and sewing! There is something meditative about the sound of the machine as it stitches my fabrics together.

I sew at our dinner table, so a stack of cut fabric next to the machine isn't really feasible. BUT, you have reminded me that I used to fit in cutting (which can be much smaller and faster to set up)at odd times when I have 15 minutes instead of an hour. Thanks. Also, loving those purply, berry colored bits.

I love having block pieces made up ahead of time. Sometimes I will put them between pages of a photo album. I have a cat. I have three quilts cut out now and they are on a trays wrapped in saran wrap (they are not in block yet). And some times I use paper plates to separate the blocks, depending on the sizes of the pieces.

I always tell myself I should spend more time prepping scraps/cutting for blocks and then I don't do it. It's probably much more efficient than my way of making one block at a time, lol! Looking forward to seeing what you're making with those pretty purples.

I generally have something ready to sew as enders but for some reason my space to the right of the machine always seems to be a mess. So, I just root around in it until I find the right pieces. Right now I've got some 2.5" squares being made into random 16 patches. It's definitely time for a straightening up of the studio.

What pretty fabrics you have ready to be made into a lovely quilt. I too cut out pieces and have them ready for a quick stolen moment of piecing. Thank you so much for hosting the Oh Scrap Link party. Happy quilting.
