Oh Scrap! : Keeping the Options Open

Last Sunday I shared a few block photos of a new scrap project I had started.

I was making some 16 patches from 2.5" squares and framing them in some 1.5" solid strips.  The initial plan was to make the entire quilt from these framed blocks.

As I started sewing blocks and realizing just how many scraps in these colors I really had, I decided to modify my plans and make some of these 5 x 5 blocks to use up even more scraps.

Now I can alternate the framed blocks with these 25-patch blocks.  I was worried it might make the quilt a bit busy but I think I will be happier with it once it is all put together.  I plan on making this quilt twin sized and I think it will look great on a child's bed.

And using up even more of these scraps is a HUGE win in my book!

(I am always stunned when I think I have just a few scraps in certain colors but when I actually pull them, they create a big pile.  It is time to use a lot of these up.)

Now it is your turn to share how you are using your scraps!

*********************************************

It is now your turn to share what you are making with scraps.  Here are the details for linking up:

  • This linky party is for any scrappy project - It can be in-process or a finished piece.
  • You can link up your blog post (not your homepage please) or Instagram photo from the past week that features your use of scraps.
  • If you are linking to a blog post, I ask that you link back to my blog somewhere in your post. So if you are writing about scraps, just get into the habit of including a link as there will be a linky party available every week!
  • If you are using Instagram, please use the hashtag #ohscrap.
  • This is a party so remember to socialize and comment on the posts of others.

Those are such great colors! I like the way you can alternate a framed block with an unframed one. Have a great Sunday, Cyndy!

What a great twist on the 25 patch block! Who would have guessed these are scraps and not fabrics from a specific line or purchased specifically for this project! Amazing is what I call it and fabulous is what I say when you use up scraps!

I couldn't agree more about using more and more! You always come up with great solutions and work arounds!

I think it looks better this way than if the blocks were all framed. It's really up a teenager's alley, I think. It uses the same colours as my son's skateboard-themed bedroom. Well done. ;^)

Ingenious! (Though you know me - I'm now picturing a warm version with lots of oranges!)

Pretty blocks. I really like how you framed them in. Are you still making a mini version with the 2.5 blocks too ? This is going to be an awesome quilt. Thank you for hosting the link party. Happy quilting.

The 2 blocks are made for each other, Cynthia. I love the colors and you are sure, this quilt looks perfect for a kid's bed.

I think that it was a great decision to include the 5 x 5 block - it works well and is more flattering to the first blocks. Love all of your greens!

Great idea to make the 5x5 blocks. It really makes the bordered units stand out.

The layout of alternating the framed blocks with the 25 patches makes a very interesting design. I bet it would work well in other color combos or even totally scrappy.

Great color combination...I know I wouldn't have enough scraps or fat quarters to do much with those colors. I'm curious -- Have you ever written about and shown how you organize your fabrics and scraps? I know I would be interested. (Hint, hint!)
