Rail Fence Quilt Number 2 and 3

I have realized I am going to have a lot of finishes to share each month so I thought I would start sharing my hospital project finishes mid-week.  It has been a flurry of activity this week!

Rail Fence finish number two is one of my favorite layouts to make.  I call it a ripple effect where you start in the middle and then each section of blocks is framed with a solid.

I think most of the blocks used to make this quilt were donated by 3 or 4 people.

I see some of mine in there too!

On the back, I used one of the fabrics I just picked up from Connecting Threads.  The rich brown is perfect for all these blocks.

This layout used 119 blocks and one yard of a solid (which also did the binding).  For these 5.5" unfinished blocks, you are going to cut the solid borders 3" wide.

Rail Fence Finish number three has a wonderful little back story behind it. The blocks for the whole quilt were sent in by Mary in memory of Alta Glen Vaughan (1872-1898).  She died at the young age of 16 years old.  She lived in Coburg, Oregon which is one of the smaller towns that this hospital supports.  If only the hospital was around then, she might not have died so young.  This little quilt will be going over to the children's program.

The layout is simple - just alternating the blocks. Mary added a lot of novelty prints to her blocks so it is just right for some young child.

I had the perfect backing for her quilt.  A friend of mine had generously donated some fabrics and one of them was this adorable Winnie the Pooh print.

The layout for this little quilt used 80 blocks.
So sweet!

Lots of blocks are rolling in every day now.  I think I am going to spend tomorrow sewing up another quilt top using these blocks.  And finish another quilt top that is up on my design wall.

Hope to share more quilts soon!

I might have to place another order!

Hi Cynthia,
I like your designs, blog, and this project, too. I’m wondering if you’ll be planning color schemes ahead (like RSC does) and listing them as you go, or the whole year in advance.
I’m trying to plan projects and supplies to take for a long RV trip. This project has good flexibility.

The blocks from Mary in honor of Alta Glen Vaughan really touched me. I'm so glad you had the perfect backing on hand to finish the quilt. You do special work. Thank you.

How wonderful of you to put together these quilts and the future ones you have planned for donations. I am hoping to do some for local donations here this winter. I miss doing that and often don't have enough time to do it anymore. I have two wiggle time tops to quilt up for that purpose.

I really like the layout with the solid inner borders! I need to try that sometime. It looks like a great way to unify all different kinds of scraps! Beautiful finishes!

I really like that first layout and it makes a great gender neutral quilt. I have some of the Winnie the Pooh fabric you used as backing for the second quilt. Fussy cut squares from it have graced many a kids quilt through the years. Looks like you may have unleashed a monster when you asked for block donations. Quilters are very generous people.

You are making great progress on getting quilts made from the blocks coming in. I'll be mailing mine after Christmas and the cold snap coming our way. I really like the Ripple layout. It takes the quilt to a whole new look. Hope you have a great weekend.

I really like the ripple effect layout, the solid gives your eyes a place to rest. But all the quilts are wonderfully scrappy. Each will bring someone warmth and brightness. Looking forward to seeing what else comes out of your rail fence blocks.

These look great! I still plan on making some for you before the end of January. I have lots more scraps, as a friend just shared more with me. It put a mix of colors in that I didn't really have before, because she's been doing some experimenting! What fun!

I really like that first layout too. I might have to try it myself sometime.

Congrats on finishing up several more donation quilts, Cynthia! Rail Fence blocks sewn into a Boston Commons layout? Brilliant!

Cynthia, those came out great. I love those pink piggies on the brown background. I had that fabric once upon a time and it was cherished. That plus the winnie-the-pooh background is spot on!! I love it. I can't remember what my blocks looked like but hopefully they arrived safe and sound. Thanks so much for the work, the mission and for sharing the progress. (-: Elana
