When I talk with groups about making scrap quilts, I tell them the best way to get started is when you complete a quilt that you really like the colors and fabrics you chose, save all the leftovers in a bag and then use them as the inspiration for a future scrap quilt.
I did just that when I finished my Jolly Bar Jumble quilt last November. I have a pile of 5 x 10" and some 3 x 5" rectangles leftover after making those two quilts. I think I have enough for a quilt without adding in any other scraps.
First, I cut the larger rectangles into 5"squares and more smaller rectangles. My plan is to make a coin quilt. I could have cut them all into small pieces, but I get a better yield when I cut into squares. Plus, I think the squares will add more interest into the quilt.
I needed a background fabric, so I dug through our solid stash. I remember getting this pinkish brown and thinking it was going to be a hard brown to use.
Boy was I wrong - it looks fantastic with these prints.
I have been busy sewing all these pieces into some long strips.
I don't think this one will take me much time at all to finish!

I remember those Jolly Bar quilts - they are so pretty! Glad you have scraps left to make another quilt. I'll enjoy seeing how you put then together. Happy Sunday!
You found a great background to go with those prints. Enjoy your scrappy stitching this weekend. So glad to see you are back to using your own scraps for something new.
Good idea! Although I love all sorts of scraps, I find that many quilters are nervous about mixing prints and colors. This gives them a way to start with confidence.
Looking forward to seeing what those long strips produce! Saving the leftovers from a previous project is a great way to start a scrap quilt!
You are right that brown works wonders with those fabrics. I like the idea of saving the leftovers from a quilt but I've been making mostly scrap quilts recently. But I'm sure I can find a bunch of scraps that would look good together.
