Oh Scrap! : More Cutting

I am still cutting up scraps for the Sew Day we will hold locally in September for Many Hands and Many Hearts.  I finished cutting all the 4.5" squares, now I am moving on to the 2.5" strips.

As I go through the giant pile of scraps, first I am pulling out anything big that I can turn into binding strips.  With the rest, I am cutting into 2.5" strips and sub-cutting them to 8.5" long and 4.5" long.  I need two of each length for every block.  I am using s safety pin to hold these four strips together.

If you haven't already figured it out, one of the blocks we are making will be Happy Blocks.  We made these in a previous block drive.  My plan is to have all the fabrics cut so the quilters can just grab items and sew.  No need to cut!

My plan is to fill this tub with pre-cut strips.  So far, I have completed 50 sets - probably about a thousand left to go!  My hope is that all this cutting will reduce the number of scraps we have and get them into a format I can just give to volunteers and they can sew together.

In a month or so, I will write up some instructions so you can sew up some blocks if you like.  These blocks will be in addition to the block drives.

What are you doing with your scraps?

*********************************************

It is now your turn to share what you are making with scraps.  Here are the details for linking up:

  • This linky party is for any scrappy project - It can be in-process or a finished piece.
  • You can link up your blog post (not your homepage please) or Instagram photo from the past week that features your use of scraps.
  • If you are linking to a blog post, I ask that you link back to my blog somewhere in your post. So if you are writing about scraps, just get into the habit of including a link as there will be a linky party available every week!
  • If you are using Instagram, please use the hashtag #ohscrap.
  • This is a party so remember to socialize and comment on the posts of others.
  • Following my blog is not necessary but it sure would be great if you do!

Great plan--grab & go quilt block sets! I do love cutting up fabric.

If I lived up there, I would come and sew! Having all the strips cut will be very efficient. Have a great Sunday, Cyndy!

That is going to be one productive sew day! I like your plan of how to cut down on creating more scraps by having the block pieces already cut so people can just stitch. May the force be with you to enable you to cut all the pieces ahead! By force, I am referring to your wonderful volunteers!

Creating kits for your event is SEW smart, Cynthia! Plus, it's a great way to put a fabric stash to work.

I'm cutting, and cutting too. Making baby quilt kits is not for the weak heart, lol. Like you, I know the volunteers will appreciate all the work done for them. Have an awesome week. ;^)

someone gave me a box of scraps and I washed them, and now there are color piles (how I store scraps) and the start to order. It's so much fun but then you're doing it towards a project, it's satisfying to see what comes of a pile isn't it? LeeAnna

Good idea to make block sets ahead! I like to cut up quilt kits for me, and put them in a bag with a nice clear note so I don't forget what I was going to do with them!

Yea for making dents in your scraps. I have some of that brightly colored dots fabric. It sure is fun. You are doing a great job getting ready for your sew in day.

Thank you! I'm also spending time with cutting my scraps into pieces that I can use whenever I want to do some mindless stitching. Have a great week!

For a camping trip, and potential grandchild project, I cut a bunch of squ and bricks for Lightning Streak blocks. 2.5" strips also for Happy Blocks. Always, so many scraps.

That's a lot of work, but hopefully it pays off in more manageable scraps and lots of blocks this fall.
