I decided to spend this week going through the scrap bin and grabbing fabric that was appropriate for bindings. Most of these scraps came from the trimmings of backing after quilting.
I set to work cutting all the cotton scraps into 2.5" wide and the flannel into 3" wide strips. I also went ahead and sewed the strips all together. I know this pile might not look that big but I could easily hide a small child underneath it.
I divided them up into 7 grocery bags - there are about 10 bindings in each bag. I am hoping I can find a few volunteers to press and roll these for us. I have a few volunteers that are not sewers and they love to help out with projects like this. I kept about a dozen that I can use for some upcoming quilts.
I would love to say the scrap pile is gone but I am guessing I still have enough to put together about 6 more bags. And every day with we end up with more!
If you are local and want to grab a bag or two, just let me know!

What a pile of strips! Great plan for getting then into a usable unit!
I'm making bindings too. Such a repetitive task but it needs to be done. Hope some volunteers come to your door to help you with all those. Enjoy! ;^)
I wish I was local - I would absolutely take a bag of those binding strips and get them ready for quilts! It's such a good idea to cut them from leftover backing pieces. Looks like you'll be ready for all kinds of quilt finishes now! Have a relaxing Sunday, Cyndy!
What a great way to make a dent in some of the scarp piles. Hope you get some volunteers to help.
That sounds like a great way to get non-sewing volunteers to help out!
I never thought about how making backings for so many quilts would also make so many scraps. I seem to be drowning in scraps myself, so you must be overwhelmed at times.

What a great way to include non-sewers!
I have a bin for.all of my leftover binding. It is easy to pull out and use up more of my scraps. Have a great week!
I save binding also...but don't end up using it much except for placemats every once in a while.
That's super sweet that you can divy the jobs up like that to make everyone involved that wants to be involved. Great delegating skills.
If I were closeby I would volunteer to help w those strips. -- Laura Haynes
I started organizing my scraps and strips but I still have a mess. Eventually I get a handle on them. lol The gremlins seem to make them multiply over night.
