Four Patch Fun

I have been working on some 4 patches in a rainbow of colors.  My initial plan was to use them as a Rainbow Scrap Challenge project, but I found myself needing more pieces for leaders/enders so I grabbed any color I could find.


 Each block is made with two fabrics - a solid and a print.  When I started this project, I had no idea what I would do with them.  It was just an opportunity to use up scraps.  Now I find myself with hundreds of these and it is time to think of layout designs.






My first try at a layout was to randomly put them up on the wall.  I didn't like that at all.  In fact, I didn't even get a photo of it!


Then I played around with colorwashing the blocks.  Because I didn't have this plan when I first started, some of the blocks were very difficult to place.

Maybe another design would be better...

















Next up was a diagonal layout in a repeating rainbow order.  It was a lot of fun, but I knew I was going to run out of yellows and oranges.





I really wanted something that would use up the blocks I had made.  



I then considered turning the 4 patches into color blocks.  I was going to turn all the blocks so they were going diagonally when I just decided I didn't like this idea either so down they all came.

I am now left with an empty design wall and a big stack of blocks again.  I think I will step away for a bit and hope inspiration strikes again soon!

It is not like I don't have a number of other projects to work on!

Oh Scrap! : Geese Migration

One of the great things about publishing patterns, is you get to see all the beautiful quilts made using your designs.  One of my designs is Geese Migration.


Remember this quilt?

Teaching quilters how to use scraps to colorwash these blocks and sew up this quilt is one of the workshops I offer.  Some previous students and other bloggers have been working on these blocks and it was suggested I host a link-up to inspire folks to finish more blocks.

Maybe even inspire folks to start their own quilt!



It is always fun to see how different each block look based on the scraps that are used.  It is one of my favorite classes to teach!

My "Close to" Finish

No, this quilt isn't "close to" being finished...It really is all completed.
But this quilt takes my "close to" concept to the extreme!

When I first wrote about pulling the fabrics for this quilt, I discussed how when I don't have the right color of fabrics, I will pull fabrics that are "close to" the colors I need and rely on them blending in.



The plan for this quilt was blues and oranges.  I did not have enough darks in either color so I went to colors that were close - blacks for the navy and brick reds for the oranges.  I find that once you get them into the quilt, they work well!



I really didn't want to buy fabric for the backing on this one, so I had to work with what I had.  Once again, I did not have the perfect piece so I went with something that was "close to" what I desired.

I had a larger cut of an orange batik with green leaves on it and just enough of a green batik with a bit of blue in it to frame the center.


It is not an ideal backing but I really don't think too many people would question the choice if I hadn't pointed it out.  I am always telling people in my workshops that when you do something with "intent", most people will just believe that that was your plan all along.




And the final "close to"?  Not at all intended but thankful I had a bit of scrap to get the binding ends to meet.  It was oh so close!
