Oh Scrap! : Does this Work?

There are a lot of things classified as scraps here at Many Hands and Many Hearts.  Yes, we have tons of fabric bits piled on lots of surfaces.  And we are always looking for new ideas on how to use them.  Additionally, we consider orphan blocks, scrappy string blocks (that have no home), UFOs and every other bag of goodies that comes our way "scraps".

Well, one of my jobs is to find ways to get these all into quilts.

Earlier this week, I was digging through my bags and boxes of blocks.  Marci always keeps us well stocked with these 10" string blocks.  We make a lot of quilts out of them.

But I also found fifteen of these 10" scrappy blocks with some solid strips in them.  Marci may have made these for us too but I think I have had them for a long time.  

They may have even come from someone else.

Hmmm...I wonder how they will look together?!

So, my task this week was to sew these blocks into a quilt top.  I think it turned out kinda fun!

These scrappy quilts are a favorite of the organizations we serve. These quilts can be handed out to almost anyone.  Don't get me wrong, they love seeing (and gifting) all the other beautiful quilts we send. But a nice pile of scrappy gender-neutral quilts is always welcome.

I wonder what I will find next to sew!

Quilts for Veterans

There have been a few Veteran quilt reaching the finish line.  

Today is the day I thought I would share them.

Cheryl sent in this fun RWB quilt.  I love her diamond quilting.

All I had to do was add the label!

Check out this vantage sweetie.  The giant 16 patch blocks came to us from an estate. I decided to put all the red and blue blocks together.  We had just the perfect flag fabric to put on the back.  It always feels good to finish someone's project and find it a home where it can bring comfort.

I think I might have already shared this one but it is so awesome, sharing it again won't hurt.  This quilt top was sent in by Joni.  It is a large quilt so we had to lay it down to photograph it.

It is hot here so I am content just hanging inside and sewing.

Oh Scrap! : Flannel Bindings

I had so many other scrap plans for this weekend but we received a huge box of flannel from an estate sale.  The top of the box looked great but it didn't take long to realize this came from a garment maker. The bottom of the box was all weirdly shaped leftovers.

I decided to just cut them into flannel bindings.  I don't often put flannel bindings on quilts - only if both the top and the back are flannel.  Due to the thickness of the quilt in those cases, I cut my binding at 3" wide.  I am happy the cutting is through, but now I just need to sew and press all of these.

I guess my other scrappy projects will have to wait for a bit...

The last of the Jewel Box Blocks

Today we share the final quilts from the Jewel Box block drive.  I hate to see these go because there are so many ways these blocks can be laid out.

This quilt was the last one to get completed so we used all the blocks that were left.  I kind of like the multicolored vibe it has.  On the back, we used a black/green/blue fabric that Sandy sent us.  We had to add in a solid to make it large enough.  This one will be perfect for a teen.

Purple and green always look great together.  Mari and Sandy sent in the fabrics for the backing.  I think this block layout is still one of my favorites.

I think blue was the predominant colored block we received.  Thanks to Kristin, we were able to put a blue flannel on the back of this one.

And finally, a blue, purple and green version.  We sized this quilt specifically to use an old Kaffe Fassett Ikat fabric I have had for decades.  It felt good that it finally found a home.

I think, if my count is correct, we made a total of 24 quilts from this block drive.  And all of them were large in size to that is amazing!  A huge thanks to all who donated blocks, fabric or labor to make all these quilts happen.

Mid Week Finishes

We here at Many Hands and Many Hearts are still focusing on pushing through some of the quilt tops that were donated to us.  A rather large queue of them were created when we were busy making quills from some block drives.

This blue, gray and taupe quilt top was sent to us from Denice.  We had the perfect gray and taupe backing for it thanks to Dorothy.  Local longarm quilter Laura finished it all up.  It is unfortunate the photos of this quilt aren't that great due to the bright sun but it really is quite pretty.

Here is a combination of colors that I might not have thought of but looks amazing - and that is navy with kind of a berry pink.  The tag for this one got misplaced so I can't say who sent in the quilt top.  For some reason, I think it was Elizabeth.

Here is a wonderful flannel quilt.  We lost the tag on this one too, but I think it was one that Cheryl recently sent in.  I just quilted it with some irregularly spaced straight lines.

I have to admit that I was the one who loses these tags - there are days where I find myself with a bit of time to quilt something up and I just grab off the pile that is waiting to be processed.  I always think I will remember the details, but nowadays, I seem forget them quickly.

I do remember the details on this quilt because I made this one.  We received a bunch of leftover scraps from a project.  There were triangles and strip sets and a small bi of yardage.  I played around with all of the bits until I came up with enough blocks for this quilt.  I think the only leftovers I had were a few squares.  I love working on these kinds of projects.

Mari donated the pink/red backing fabric, and local longarm quilter Laura finished it up.

And finally, there is this sweet quilt.  We were gifted the little center panels quite some time ago.  I kept trying to find some fabrics that would work for frames in our stash but we don't get a lot of these dusty pastels.  Local quilter Chris offered to take them home and find something in her stash.  I knew she would find the perfect prints.

Karen sent in this dusty pink fabric we used on the back.  She actually donated a big piece of yardage which we used on a couple other quilts.  There was just enough left for this cutie.

So that is it for today.  Between the Fourth and the Sister's Quilt Show this weekend, most of the volunteers have been busy elsewhere.  I am hoping in a couple weeks, we will get back to our regular pace.

Oh Scrap! : Moving Forward

Hope all of you survived the weekend.  My dog Arthur had surgery on the 2nd so he has been pretty bored - no running, jumping or rough-housing.  I can tell you it has been a challenge!

I did finish the last few blocks I needed for the autumn bowtie quilt.  Each block measures 8.5" unfinished. I haven't sewn the blocks together yet, but I do have the blocks all stacked up next to my machine now.  I had lots of options for layouts but I decided to keep it simple.

I can't say I used up a lot of the autumn-colored scraps we have - but I do think we made a small dent in them.  I might have to make a second bow tie quilt to use more of them up.

Friday the Fourth

 Happy Fourth of July!

 Hope you have lots of family, friends and good food during your celebration.

When you have a dog, this holiday can be a stressful one.  Sadly, my neighborhood gets a little crazy with fireworks - even though they are banned here in the city limits.

Arthur just had surgery to remove some cancerous lumps so I will have to work extra hard to keep him quiet.  We don't want any pulled stitches.

One of the board members loves Tula Pink prints.  She made this quilt top for Many Hands and Many Hearts.  She also donated the backing.  I sent it off to local longarm quilter Laura to get quilted.

Kristin sent in this quilt top and backing.  Sorry, this time of year is hard to get photos because the sun is always so bright. The prints in this quilt are really cute.  There are lots of women dressed in high vintage fashion.

Elizabeth made this fun scrappy quilt top.  A lot of the novelty prints in this one we thought would appeal to a young man so we decided to use some of our camo fabric for the back.  New local longarm quilter Gloria finished this one up.  Sadly, she has to have shoulder surgery this summer so it might be a while before she can quilt for us again.

A local volunteer made this bright and happy string quilt.  She also gave us a pretty purple grunge material for the backing. I have not tried this string block variation.  I really like it!

This quilt top and backing sent in by Kristin has such soft and peaceful colors in it.  I love this pale gray and different shades of peach.

We made a big delivery to the hospital earlier this week.  They are always so appreciative of all the quilts and always comment how beautiful each of them are. Thanks to so many of you, we are able to make all this happen!
