Oh Scrap! : Scrap Vortex Quilt Top

With temperatures in the upper 90's for a few weeks now, I have been staying inside and giving my sewing machine a workout.  Less than a month ago, I started sewing together small scraps following along with Amanda Jean over at Crazy Mom Quilts.  Have you seen her quilt along based on her scrap vortex quilt?  I am now ready to share my quilt top!

Crazy huh?!
I have no idea how many pieces of fabric are in this quilt top but it measures about 70" x 80".
I really had a lot of fun sewing all those bits and fitting each odd shaped block together like a puzzle.

My main goal for this quilt was to use up some of my black background/bright colored scraps.  They never seem to find a home!  Once I started on the quilt, I decided to only use red, pink, orange and yellow scraps.  A few pieces of turquoise and lime did make it in there but I liked how they looked so I left them in.

Every shape, print and size went into this quilt.  There are tiny crumbs, strings, bindings, chunks, 1930's, novelty, batik and even star wars in the mix.

This is how it all started - just some pairs of fabric!

What are you doing with your scraps this week?  Be sure and share!

Here are the details for linking up with Oh Scrap!:

You've got lots of happy scraps that are now mingling together and loving their new friendships! This is beautiful. Think of all the memoires you'll have as you look at your fabrics and remember each project. Bravo!

Your Vortex turned out beautiful! It is always so rewarding to use scraps, especially when they all come together! I cannot believe how hot it's been in Oregon!! It was never like that when I lived there! It's been a very mild summer here so far, that also never happens!

Wonderfully bright Scrap Vortex - and wow I need to do more sewing to catch up with you and a finished quilt top!

I have started one, also. Mine is not as far along as yours. I am using just the scraps in my dining room. I have gobs of scraps in my sewing room in the basement. I guess I will be making more than one Scrap Vortex. Yours looks amazing!!

Oh, this finished quilt is so much better as a whole than as parts (if that makes sense?) - it works wonderfully! I'm always amazed at how many scraps you come up with. I think the scrap fairies come and populate your sewing studio during the night, hee hee.

Your quilt top looks amazing! It is fun seeing it in your limited fabric color selection.

I just ran across that vortex idea this last weekend, and decided to do one in hopes of reducing some of my small scraps, too! I love yours, and the idea of limiting your palette to just those colors. I'll have to think about color palette a little bit ... before I give up and just throw everything in. =)

You always just nail the scrap quilts, Cynthia, and this one, I just love. Those hits of turquoise really do add something that makes me smile. I'd love to do this, should do this, quilt, but I worried that it would look too headache-inducing. If I controlled the colours a bit as you did...hmmm.

This is one POWerful quilt. It was a great fabric choice, so bright and warm. The touchs of cool, including the gray print, give it a nice balance, like sour cream on a taco.

Love how that looks! I have a scrappy project that briefly looked like that (now it's cut into kite-shaped pieces to be sewn together again!).

Now I know why she calls it a Scrap Vortex quilt. That is awesome Cyndy!

This is really a stunner. Thanks for pointing out how you tightened the color palette (and made a few exceptions). It feels cohesive, but it might have taken me a while to figure out why. Well done!
