It's a Flimsy!

I just couldn't resist.....

After seeing all the components for my Licorice Allsorts quilt sitting on my cutting table, I couldn't wait to get them sewn into a quilt top.

I am so very pleased with how it turned out!

I made this quilt following the #junequiltqal hosted by crazy mom quilts.  My quilt looks a little different due to some changes I made to the pattern.

One of the first changes I made was to make my strip sets a bit larger.  Rather than the 4 x 8' suggested size, I went with a larger 6 x 12" size.  Some of my strips were as wide as 3" so I felt I needed a bit larger scale to get the scrappy look I wanted.

I also pieced my cornerstones.  The larger strips sets meant my cornerstones were also going to be larger.  Rather than use stash fabric, I decided to pull a few solid string and keep using scraps.
The more out of the scrap bin the better!

I also went with a darker color scheme.  When I saw the sample quilt, I knew right away that this project would be a great opportunity for me to use all of my black/brights scraps.  I seldomly find a home for these scraps so I jump at every chance!

I still have to trim down the edges.  I like to cut my inset triangles a bit larger and trim up the quilt after it is quilted.  Then I never have to worry about losing my points along the edge.

I wasn't the only person who fell in love with this quilt.  I had a friend visit and she claimed this one for herself.  She even helped me pick out some backing pieces so now I just need to find some time to quilt it!

I named this quilt Licorice Allsorts.  Some of my readers weren't familiar with the candy so here is a little photo.  I think the name is perfect!

Have a great weekend!

And for those who like to get a great deal, I just saw Craftsy is having a 24 hour flash sale on some of their supplies and kits.  I saw some great backing yardage pieces for under $5 a yard.  I have used their Boundless fabric and have been very happy with it.  It is a great time to stock up!

Your version of the June quilt is just gorgeous, Cyndy! I love how the bright solids glow against the black fabrics in your cornerstones. No wonder your friend who saw it in person claimed it!

Wow! I don't care for licorice of any sort, but I LOOOOOOVE your quilt. Every choice you made proves once again that you're such a talented designer and quilter! ❤️❤️❤️

I have loved seeing your stages of this quilt. And the finish is amazing. I love All Sorts, too. But it is inspiring me to use my blacks as well.

Love it as well as the name! How fun!

Oh it is a beauty! Congratulations! I hope is was a REALLY close and good friend who "claimed" it. That sounds like a lot of gall to me. When people try to do that to my quilts, it usually results in a pretty rude comment from me! Unless, of course, it is a REALLY good and close friend and it's done with a lot of tact! LOL.

This is so great! I love how you customized the pattern to fit your scraps. It's amazing how much the different colors people have chosen can change the look of the quilt. Your version looks fun!

Love your version of this quilt - I also love anything licorice, especially Bassett's Licorice Allsorts, the best seller in the UK. & I even have some L.A.fabrics. In the 80's I had a Fancy Dress Hire shop and made a child's L.A. outfit, called Bertie Bassett - wish I still had a photo to share with you :)

I didn't think anything could be better than Licorice Allsorts but I was wrong. You did it. No calories or side effects, just a gorgeous quilt. Congratulations.

What a great variation on this design! I love the use of all those striking, but hard to use up fabrics and the name is really inspired. Well done on all counts.

Now that I can see all the cornerstones and strips in place as part of the whole, I love this flimsy even more! You're right that it looks marvelous in your dark/bright scraps.

Fantastic quilt! You've got some great brights on black, love the larger version (of course you should adapt the pattern to fit your scraps!) and the name is spot on Perfect!

This looks great! I didn't have time to join this QAL, but I have it in mind to go back to. I love your version with dark scraps and lighter background!

I really like this quilt. Yes, using up the black strips can be a challenge but you;ve made this look so easy. Is that a gray background or a white? No matter what, I think this is a winner!!

Val's Quilting Studio said...

I too like it. It looks quick and that it's the perfect scrap buster!
