A Friday Finish

Even though the weather here in Oregon has been beautiful, I found some indoor time to get a quilt of my own onto my frame.

I love it when a finished quilt was made entirely from scraps and stash!  Lots of old stringy black scraps went into this quilt.

I did use some Essex yarn dyed linen from my stash for the large squares.  And the bright dots used in the cornerstones is a piece I acquired years ago.  It feels good to find it a home finally.

I decided to just quilt a panto called Rosie on this one in a black thread.  I knew the pattern would fill in those gray squares nicely.

The quilting also worked with the stash piece I used for the backing.  I was gifted this large fruit and floral fabric - it really brightened up the quilt.  It is a fun surprise when you turn the quilt over!

I hope all of you are seeing some nice weather and enjoying the outdoors.  My vegetable gardens are now planted and I am busy plucking all the weeds that try to take up residence in my flower beds this time of year.  It is a battle!

Have a great weekend!

Finally Something to Show

Hurray!  I found some time to sew!

I was able to finally finish up a quilt top.

My scrap bins were still filled with a bunch of bright strings containing black.  I wanted to put together a quilt top that would hopefully use up a lot of them.

I paired them with a dark gray/black Essex yarn dyed linen.

I think it measures about 70" square.
My next goal is to find some time to quilt it!

Last fall, I made a similar quilt except I used solids in the cornerstones and set the blocks on point.
It is hard to pick a favorite!

Have a fantastic weekend!

TGIFF - Licorice Allsorts Finish

I have been waiting for a special day to share my finished Licorice Allsorts quilt and today is the day!

I made this quilt following crazymomquilt's #junequiltqal.  I knew as soon as I saw her sample that this quilt would be ideal for all of those black background scraps that I had piled up and never seem to use.
(I probably still have enough for a second quilt!)

I did make a few changes to Amanda Jean's instructions.  I knew a lot of my strings were up to 3" wide so I decided to make my strip sets 6" x 12".  I really am glad I made that change to the scale - it really fits these fabrics better.  The other change I made was to the cornerstones.  I decided to piece mine.  When I increased the size of the strip sets, that meant my cornerstones were larger too.  I felt a single fabric would stand out far too much - plus this way, I used more scraps.

That is always a big bonus!

One of my client's fell in love with this quilt before it was finished and offered to buy it.  Because it wasn't quilted yet, she got to pick the fabric for the backing.  She chose this mod print but there wasn't enough for the whole back.

I decided to add a giant strip set to the back.  How is that for scale!  I think she is going to love it.  I believe she plans on picking it up this weekend.

It is going to be a hard quilt to give up!  I am almost hoping she decides not to buy it....
Then it can be mine!

Thanks for stopping by TGIFF.  I hope you have a finish to link up!

Please remember to visit some of the quilters that link up their finishes before you run off.
It is a great way to be inspired and maybe make a new friend!  :)

Busy Hands Quilts (Finished or not Friday)

It's a Flimsy!

I just couldn't resist.....

After seeing all the components for my Licorice Allsorts quilt sitting on my cutting table, I couldn't wait to get them sewn into a quilt top.

I am so very pleased with how it turned out!

I made this quilt following the #junequiltqal hosted by crazy mom quilts.  My quilt looks a little different due to some changes I made to the pattern.

One of the first changes I made was to make my strip sets a bit larger.  Rather than the 4 x 8' suggested size, I went with a larger 6 x 12" size.  Some of my strips were as wide as 3" so I felt I needed a bit larger scale to get the scrappy look I wanted.

I also pieced my cornerstones.  The larger strips sets meant my cornerstones were also going to be larger.  Rather than use stash fabric, I decided to pull a few solid string and keep using scraps.
The more out of the scrap bin the better!

I also went with a darker color scheme.  When I saw the sample quilt, I knew right away that this project would be a great opportunity for me to use all of my black/brights scraps.  I seldomly find a home for these scraps so I jump at every chance!

I still have to trim down the edges.  I like to cut my inset triangles a bit larger and trim up the quilt after it is quilted.  Then I never have to worry about losing my points along the edge.

I wasn't the only person who fell in love with this quilt.  I had a friend visit and she claimed this one for herself.  She even helped me pick out some backing pieces so now I just need to find some time to quilt it!

I named this quilt Licorice Allsorts.  Some of my readers weren't familiar with the candy so here is a little photo.  I think the name is perfect!

Have a great weekend!

And for those who like to get a great deal, I just saw Craftsy is having a 24 hour flash sale on some of their supplies and kits.  I saw some great backing yardage pieces for under $5 a yard.  I have used their Boundless fabric and have been very happy with it.  It is a great time to stock up!

Oh Scrap! : Licorice Allsorts

We have been experiencing a heatwave here so I have been staying indoors where it is a bit cooler.  That means time in my sewing room!

I have been working on the cornerstones for the quilt along hosted by crazy mom quilts.  I went with a bit bigger scale so my cornerstones need to be 6" square.  Rather than using a larger piece of fabric,  I decided to piece mine using more scraps!

I threw a few pieces up on my design wall to see how it looks.  I am using a black and white widescreen fabric for the background.  I am excited to get this one together!

I have all of my pieces cut and ready for assembly next week.  Last week, Karen said my strip sets look like Licorice Allsorts so that is what I am calling this quilt.  I think the name is perfect!
