Oh Scrap! One Last RSC Block

On this last day of September (Can you believe it?!), I have one more blue block to share with you for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge garden quilt.

When the color blue was announced, the first thing blue I thought of was a morning glory.

Well, it took me all month to figure out how to make something that might pass for those blooms.  That is if I tell people what they are supposed to be  :)

I thought I had taken photos of some of my early attempts but I guess I was too quick to hide the evidence.  They were even too poor for the orphan block stash!

I did toss up all of my blocks to date up on a design wall.  I am going to have to make some smaller blocks in future months or this quilt is going to be large enough to literally cover my gardens!

I think next month should be dark green and I already have a few ideas for some fill in blocks.  I will save some of my other green blocks for a lighter shade next year.

What have you been doing with your scraps?

Log Cabin Finish

I know that for many quilters, the basting and quilting step is one that slows down the finishing of a quilt.  I am just the opposite.  If I can get a project to the quilt top stage, quilting and binding are usually only days away.

I had no plans to make a log cabin quilt until Julie decided to host the Log Cabin Loonies over on her blog and I just didn't want to be left out.

I had picked up the plaid fabrics when I did a Trunk Show Presentation at a guild meeting.  They had tubs of plaids and stripes they were selling.  I quickly sorted out these in greens, blues and browns.  They have been waiting patiently for the right project and I knew a traditional log cabin quilt would be perfect.

I used 2.5" centers and 1.5" strips for the blocks.  They finished up at 8".
I shared how I made the diamond detail in this previous post.

My favorite quilt store is closing so I made one final shopping trip to wish the owners luck in their retirement.  I was able to pick up a super soft gray brushed cotton for the backing and binding - I knew I was not going to have anything quilt right in my stash.  (All the fabric was 40% off so it went into the big stack of fabric I brought home with me).

I had so much fun sewing up this log cabin, I decided to get out the burgundy plaids I bought at the same guild meeting and start a second quilt.  Something to share at a later date!

Oh Scrap! : Log Cabin Loonies

This week has been all about sewing my log cabin blocks.

I finished all of the blocks I needed for the quilt top made from some plaid fat quarters and cream scraps.  Once I had them up on the design wall, I didn't like the big spaces of background so I made a little change to a few of the blocks.

I cut a 2.5" square and sewed it diagonally to the light portion of the blocks.  In other words, I attached a "flip" corner.

Once I put them back up on the design wall and sewed all the blocks together, I ended up with a 48" x 64" quilt top.  I really like how that one little detail changed the look of the quilt.

The Log Cabin Loonies event is still running for a few more weeks over at JulieKQuilts and I don't want to miss out.....So I started another log cabin quilt.

I will share some of those blocks soon!
