My Rainbow Garden

This year, I decided to do something a bit different for one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.  Each month I made various blocks that represent things found in my garden in the designated color.  I love seeing all these fun designs but I have never wanted a whole quilt made with the various block.  

So this way, I had the joy of making each block and putting them all together into a fun quilt.

I enjoyed searching the internet for each block design.  And many, I simply designed using graph paper and a pencil.

Some of my favorite blocs are the apples, pear and the tomato.

I not only included various fruits, vegetables and flowers, but you can find lots of my garden friends and foes in my quilt.

Even the imperfect bee is busy pollinating my flowers!

I pulled a dotted backing from my stash and added a striped binding from a fabric I have been trying to use for years.

This bright quilt will definitely be appreciated during the winter months when I miss the bounty of color, food and enjoyment I get out of my gardens. 

 It will keep me cozy as I earmark my seed and gardening catalogs dreaming of spring!

End of the Garden Season

I don't have a finished quilt to share this week but I did finish up my Rainbow Scrap Challenge garden quilt top.

Sorry about the glaring sunlight in the upper corner.  There is only one spot in my fence that I can get a photo and I had to wait all day for the sun to pass.  And I couldn't wait any longer to get this post written.  (I am not gonna complain too much - it was a beautiful fall day!)

I had a lot of fun making the blocks for this quilt throughout the year.  Once a RSC color was announced, I started thinking about what garden items worked for that color.  It was fun finding or designing blocks.  I tried to stay fairly true to the items that actually can be found in my garden.

When I went to put all the blocks together, I did have to modify some of the blocks a bit to make them work with the quilt.  And there were a few previously made ones that went into the orphan block suitcase.  They will need to be used in another quilt - they just didn't make the cut!

I made my birdhouse block with the little nuthatch bird during the winter, so it was fun to see that it was a bit prophetic.

For the first time, a Bewick's Wren nested in one of the birdhouses.  It acts just like a nuthatch - and it took me a bit to figure out what kind of bird it was.  

This little mama sure kept the bugs down in my gardens!  I hope they come back next year.

So Scrappy for RSC19 

Oh Scrap! : October RSC Blocks

It is time to pull out those dark scraps for October's RSC blocks.  I didn't used to like these colors in my rainbow quilts but I have grown to appreciate them - especially brown.  It's warm color really blends well with all of the other colors.

I finished up my ten Bright Hope blocks in brown.  I don't have any plans to make them in black but I might make some in gray - I need to think about what size I want this quilt to be.

So far I only have forty of these 6" blocks so I have a long ways to go.

While I already shared my snail block last month, I did make a chicken block for my garden quilt.  Just so those snails don't get out of control (however my possum and raccoon family that I share my property with think they are a treat too.)

Last winter I was adopted by a wayward chicken so I wanted her in my quilt.  This is her staring in my studio window wanting food - it only took her about a day to find me.  She soon found she could actually get right on the window sill.  Which can be quite a shock when you turn around and aren't expecting her!  She has since found a new home and is quite happy.

I still need to make this month's blocks for my garlic knots and my 25-patch.

There is still plenty of time!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge at So Scrappy

Oh Scrap! : The Last of the Purple

I have really enjoyed playing in my purple scraps this month and seeing everyone's lovely blocks. 

 It is my favorite color!

I made this Lupine block for my Garden Quilt while I had my purple scraps out.  I saw this idea of stacking different sized four patches years ago and I filed it away in my mind palace.  Not sure if my block looks anything like the block I remember, but I am happy with the results.

I am slowly piecing together the bottom third of the top and hope to share the finish in October.  I just keep getting distracted by other projects!

This week I also finished four purple blocks for my Garlic Knots.  This completes making Septembers Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks.  I look forward to seeing what color October brings.

With all of my RSC blocks done, I will have to find other scrap projects to work on.

There are certainly many to choose from right now!

A Quilt Update

I thought I would update you on my progress to finishing the top for my RSC Garden Quilt.  Even though I have been working on some Orphan Block quilts, I am still sewing up blocks and components for many other quilts.

That is always how I sew!

I think the last two blocks I showed you were these pink ones.  I decided I just did NOT like that bottom flower block in my quilt so I modified it some and made another one...

This block is so much better!

I pulled out my brown scraps and made a few more blocks.  I think that small snail block took me as long to make as half my blocks combined!

I didn't have snails when I lived in Washington - we had the giant banana slugs.  So when I moved to Oregon, I thought the snails were cute.  Let's just say I don't think that any more!

I guess I am about halfway done with sewing all my blocks together.  The bottom half will be a bit slower going because I still have a few more blocks to make.

My goal is to have this one finished in September.
