Oh Scrap! : Cleaning up the Small Bits

Every once in a great while, I get to the point where I have to deal with the small bits that are floating around in my scrap bins.

The bin that first got my attention was the big tub that holds all of my low volume scraps. I decided to sort out pretty much every piece that I could not cut a 2.5" square from.

As I was sorting all these scraps, I decided to also deal with a pile of solid grays that have been sitting on the corner of my cutting table.  They are all different shades and I decided I would somehow incorporate them into this project too.

I thought I would first sew up the low volume bits and square them up to 5".

Then I took the time to sort the various shades of grays and cut some strips to create frames around the sewn slabs.

It felt nice to know I was using up these small "crumbs" so I continued to pull these bits out of my color bins too.  I have been slowly purging and cutting pieces at 1.5" square.  While I don't have a firm plan yet, I do have a hint of an idea as to how I am going to sew all these together.  But I am going to make you wait until I get a block or two sewn before I share the next step.

For now, I will be slowly cutting up tiny scraps.....I know these aren't tiny in some people's quilting but I rarely deal with bits smaller than 2.5" squares.  So this seems a bit ridiculous to me!  :)

I look forward to seeing what your plan is. I should sort through my scraps too, the boxes are overflowing!

Looking forward to seeing both the low volume blocks and your colored blocks develop into projects.

That kind of sewing is low stress and fun - I could be doing some of that with my scraps, too! Hope you're enjoying your Sunday!

What an interesting project! Sounds great, love those little blocks so far!

I'm anxious to see what you do with those low volume/gray blocks! I always feel like I've conquered the world after sorting and using bits and pieces! I use a lot of tiny pieces, as you know...even to me 1 1/2" squares are tiny but very doable!

Way to go! I find it very satisfying to put the littlest bits and pieces some people throw away to good use.

You keep such small pieces. You are also very creative with your pieces. I can't wait to see what you make with the small colored pieces.

I can't wait to see what you do with your 'tiny' pieces! 8)
(I'm giggling since I'm currently madly making log cabin blocks using 1" strips!)

How can it be SEW ridiculous? You've created 5" squares from bits that some would discard! I, for one, will be looking forward to seeing what you've done with these. Because... I have an absolute TON of tiny pieces!!!

Looking forward to seeing what comes out of those scraps.

Love your scrappy blocks. And I wonder what's next.

And you will get a beautiful quilt out of them where they would normally have been turned into rubbish. So you could call it your trash quilt.

You really got my attention now! I love little pieces. (no, a 2.5" piece is not a small piece to me, lol) I too am looking forward to your next post about these scraps. Enjoy! ;^)

I always love what you do with your scraps. Now I know I am not the only one who keeps such small pieces of fabric!

I've been trying to use up small scraps and crumbs lately, too. Can't wait to see what you do with yours!

It's nice to know someone else leaves piles of old fabric out. I like your light blocks. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

I've been working with bits, too. I know there's a limit to my patience, but I haven't reached it yet....Your gray-and-soft blocks will look wonderful. (Right now I imagine them as the background for a big flower. Now, is that flower bold and colorful or a deeper soft neutral? My imagination hasn't gotten that far . . .)

The results are absolutely lovely. I must admit that scraps tat little at my house have for a long time been destined for the dogged pile. I just have too much fabric and too many scraps already. But I totally admire your work!

I dread to think how long it would take me to cut my scraps into 2.5" squares!

It will be interesting to see what you have up your sleeve! I totally understand when you say the tiny bits seem a bit ridiculous...if I saved all my scraps my sewing room would look like an episode of 'Hoarders'. :) Have fun with your scrap sorting!

You've piqued my interest! I think 2.5" is a pretty good size to cut down to. Myself? I usually go to 2". After that ... good-bye! Lol!
