PSP20 and Hands2Help

 I can't remember who started the Postage Stamp Pandemic (PSP20) but I was quick to hop on board.   Having finished a postage stamp quilt not too long ago, I decided to bump up the size of my cut squares to 2".  The memory of sewing up all those smaller sizes was still very fresh in my mind!

All of the fabric for the top of this quilt all came out of scrap bins.  Every time I would come across a chunk of solid fabric in a shade I had not used before, I would make a block

For the print squares, I really focused on cutting up scraps I am tired of seeing or those that I knew I would have a hard time using.  So a few odd panel pieces, novelty fabrics and lots of multi-colored prints fell under the rotary cutter.

When it came time to quilt it, I decided to use the piecing as my marking and stitched in a double eight pattern.  It was easy placing those loops in the appropriate square and knowing that my spacing was going to be just right.

I even used a bunch of leftover binding scraps to make a scrappy binding.  I don't often do this but it worked perfectly for this quilt.  

For the backing, I used an orange/blue print I picked up at Connecting Threads.  Their clearance section is my favorite place to get affordable large cuts for quilt backs.

Originally, I laid out all the colors randomly across the quilt and was not very happy with how it looked.  We all know I love a challenge, so I started playing with the color hues of the blocks.  I was really pleased with how it turned out.

I will be donating this quilt to Happy Chemo as part of the Hands2Help quilt drive.  I have sent quilts to Emily over at Ems Scrap Bag for quite a few years now.  Cancers Sucks - so if I can bring a bit of comfort to someone going through chemo, I am more than happy to do so!

Oh Scrap! : Focused on Scraps

 Even though I have been trying to spend a lot of time outdoors, this week I have been also focused on sewing up some scraps.

I found a few more solid colors to make some more postage stamp blocks.  These are becoming a bit tedious to sew - and to cut all the pieces.  For the prints, I am really trying to focus on finding some of the most unloved scraps I have.  So these blocks are really taking a lot of time to complete.

I organized them all up on the design wall.  I still need four more blocks.  I found a medium pink and a very light yellow that will fit in nicely.  I think I will try and find one more medium green and dig again for a purple.  If I can't find something in my stash, I can always shift the blocks around a bit and make some more darker blocks.  I am getting so close!

I have started cutting all the bits for my RSC blocks and used these Well Suited blocks as a leader/ender project as I made the postage stamp blocks.  I used the bonus triangles from the flying geese to make the pinwheels.

I added the blue blocks to the other completed RSC blocks.  I forgot I was making four of these blocks each month so I need to make one more.  No problem there - I still have lots of blue scraps!

Speaking of blue, here is another Scrap Mixology quilt I made using this same Well Suited block pattern.  I just made the woven layout shared in the pattern.

I could make a second blue quilt and still not use all the blue scraps I have.

Oh Scrap! : Switching to Blue

 

Blue is the new color for the month of April.  I have already began the process of sorting and cutting for all of my RSC projects.  When I was digging in my blue bin, I found three shades of solids that I have not yet used in my Postage Stamp project. I quickly got them sewn up into blocks.

I think I have just six more blocks to make and I can sew the blocks together into a quilt top.  This is one of the Hands2Help quilts I hope to donate this year.

I still had green scraps I needed to sew up from last month.  So I made these little log cabin blocks in green as a leader/ender project.  They are made from 3/4" and 1" cut strips.  Whose bright idea were these?  No wonder I am not finishing all my blocks each month!!

...okay, but they are kinda cute!

Oh Scrap! : Postage Stamp Blocks

 Oh Dear - Here it is the last weekend of the March and I still don't have all my green RSC blocks completed.  Where did this month go?!?

I did finish five more postage stamp blocks - the challenge for me right now is finding some scraps of solids in colors I haven't used yet.  I do have some larger cuts of stash I can use if necessary.  But I always like to use my scraps first!

The rest of my RSC blocks will have to be completed in April when I work on the next color.  It is hard for me to find sewing time in the Spring...so many other outdoor distractions!

Oh Scrap! : Springtime Green

 I am certainly enjoying spring - both outside and in my sewing room.  The RSC color for March is green and I finished quite a few blocks this week.  Yay!

I added a few more postage stamp blocks to the stack...

I gave them a quick count - hoping I was almost finished with them.  But I only have 26 completed out of a needed 42 blocks.  I am going to have to do another "solids" search so I can finish a bunch more blocks.

I completed my four Well Suited blocks in green for one of my 2021 Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.

Here are the first three month's worth of blocks up on the wall.  I am not sure on what block layout I will go with.  As my Well Suited pattern shows, there are lots of options!

As I make the flying geese for my blocks, I am immediately turning the bonus triangles into pinwheels.  I am adding the blocks to some blue pinwheels I made when I made this all blue Scrap  Mixology quilt.

Here are all the completed blocks to date squished together up on my design wall.  I will probably add a sashing of some sort between the blocks.  I just haven't figured out yet what that will look like.

I think I still have at least two more RSC block designs to finish for March.  Which is great, because I still have a ton of green scraps left!

Oh Scrap! : Not Much to Share

 Springtime keeps teasing us here in the PNW so I find myself wanting to be outside whenever the sun is out.  Lots of cleanup to do so all the gardens are ready to plant soon.

I did get my green scraps out and started cutting for all my RSC blocks.  I finished sewing two of my postage stamp blocks and one of my Well Suited blocks.  The tiny pinwheel is made with the bonus triangles from the flying geese - gotta use every last bit!

Most of my sewing time lately is spent sewing all the Covered in Love blocks together.  I have quilted the second Fiddlesticks and hope to finish the binding this week.  I should be ready to share it in Friday's Finish post.  I have the first of the red/white/blue quilt top loaded up on my machine.  So now I have to quilt it up before I can go on to something else!
