Even though the end of the year is still a couple months away, I am starting to evaluate my scraps to determine what type of scraps I want to focus on next year. My biggest scrap peeve right now is my bins are full of tiny bits (or crumbs).
So 2022 is going to be all about purging those from my scrap bins.
I decided to go ahead and start this month with my gray scraps.
Once I pulled all the small bits from my scrap bin, I realized that a few crumb blocks a month were not going to fix the problem. This past year, I saw a few people making placemats for donation so I thought I would do the same. This project will not only burn through those scraps, but I can also use some old stash for the backings and some batting scraps I have been saving.
Win - Win - Win!
I will square them up once I get them quilted.
I also thought I would clean out some of my "busier" low volume scraps. I don't always find a use for these scraps so I have a quilt idea in mind which should use up quite a few. These squares are cut at 3.5". I am using my AccuQuilt fabric cutter to chop up the scraps so the cutting is going pretty quickly. I still have a long way to go before I can start sharing my idea.

I have been thinking of a placemat project, as well. You are off to a good start, Cynthia! I'll be looking forward to seeing what you have in mind for those busier low volume scraps. I just made a (failed) attempt at using some of mine. I would welcome a better idea!
twice now the computer has eaten my comment mid type. I just don't know. Third time's the charm. I wish we were in a bee as I like the way you approach your design. Like mine in a way, and I too have a mighty bin of low volume but busy prints I want to use. I am now binding one project with them and love it
Crumb quilting is a whole area onto itself. I've watched several Youtube videos where folks show how to use even the smallest bits. I actually love your higher volume fabrics in the little 9 patch blocks. Place mats are always useful too.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with your crumbs. I've got plenty to work with but have just not found the courage to try sewing with them.

The scraps keep piling up don't they? I've got several long term scrap projects going but nothing put together. I'm looking forward to what you're going to do with your new idea.
Crumb quilting is a good idea for placemats. I too look forward to seeing what you design!
I think crumbs and scraps should be an expected outcome of quilting but we still seem to be surprised at how fast they accumulate. I am looking forward to seeing your journey with these.
Hi Cynthia, good luck with the crumbs! That's mostly what I have I think - more smaller scraps than big ones because if they are big enough, they go back in with my regular stash. At least I know where to find them when I need them. Thanks for hosting and have a great week.
