I am sure many of you realized that as I dug through my orphan blocks for my placemat project, I would get distracted and start some new projects. Not only did I put some blocks onto my design wall (that I shared last week), but I also pulled some blocks to start a fun little baby quilt.
Tucked away in a scrap bag I was gifted were some solid strip sets and triangles like the ones above. I cut the strip sets into as many triangles as I could make. They appear to be leftovers from a couple projects so they aren't a perfect match. But I think I can do something with them.
My plan is to sew them up into various combinations and make blocks like the one above. I will them trim them down to 6" square. Then I think I will pull a black Kona slid and add some sashing and a border. I should have enough to make a baby quilt!
I have a few sew days scheduled in the weeks ahead so this will be one of the projects I plan on working on. I should be able to finish the whole quilt top easily in an afternoon!
I am curious - Do you save your spare parts and orphan blocks?

Valentine's Day is coming up fast. I saw this tutorial at Connecting Threads for using your scraps to make Valentine postcards. What a great idea!

Cute scrappy block! Love that it was saved from the trash bin.
Love what you are doing with those spare parts. You know me, when it comes to pieces like that I have a serious meeting with my seam ripper, lol. But your block is so lovely I might start to keep spare parts...!? I only keep blocks that were one too many or a tester, otherwise, back into the scrap bins they go. ;^)
The leftover pieces will make a lovely crib quilt, happy stitching!
Do I save my spare parts and orphan blocks? ROFL!! You are talking to the reigning Scrap Queen of my quilt bee. I save ALL the scrappy bits!!! Mine and those of some of my more generous quilting friends. :o))
I always enjoy seeing what you do with your orphan blocks. Mine are in a drawer (stuffed) and a bag (also stuffed), plus I gave some to our annual silent auction. Maybe I should make something with them?
I do save all my scraps and orphan blocks. Sounds like you had fun and will make a cute and colorful baby quilt.
You always have great ideas for your orphan blocks! These will make a bright and happy quilt. Have a great Sunday, Cyndy!
That will be such a happy kids quilt!!
Such fun happy scrap blocks you are working on and great use of orphan triangles. Happy quilting.
Hi Cynthia, that's going to look great for a baby quilt. Yes, I sure do keep any kind of scraps and orphan blocks. Hopefully to be incorporated....one day, into something new. It's the best kind of re-using there is! Have a great week.
I save orphan blocks and periodically make a quilt from them. Spare parts get thrown in with the orphans but I haven't tried to make anything with them. I'm surprised the box isn't overflowing. Your baby quilt is going to be wonderful.
Those orphan blocks are going to make a nice baby quilt, especially adding the black sashing.
Yes, I save all the parts, yet can get confused when trying to use them up.
