Occasionally, along with blocks, fabric or quilt tops, we get some unique items or orphan blocks. In this case, we got some partially finished blocks. I just set them aside,
However, I kept thinking about them and would stack some coordinating fabric on top of them.
There were eight hydrangea blocks - some were completely framed and some were not. We did have a similar fabric in stock that I thought would work to finish framing out those blocks.
I dug through some scraps and found the dark purple fern fabric that was previously used on a back. While in the scraps, I found a fun purple floral and another print that would work with the greens.
I just alternated the blocks and pretty quickly had a top. It is not the loveliest quilt but I still think it works. And it made some space in the scrap bin!
I do enjoy getting creative with these types of projects. I just never know when the inspiration will strike. I think sometimes I just need a project that uses my brain rather than the mindless sewing of blocks together - which is what I do a lot of nowadays.
I have many more projects like this...I wonder what will strike my fancy next!

This is a very handsome top, good job!
I too love when a quilt gets planned in front of the scrap bins and shelves instead of the usual paper-drawing-design technique. I call that "wing it" as in whatever fly by that looks cohesive. These impromptu projects are a surprise to me as I don't know how it will turn out. So much fun. You did a great job with the dark fern. I love it. Enjoy! ;^)
I think that's a lovely quilt! I bet it will find the perfect home with someone who loves purple. You do amazing things with those donated orphan blocks and scraps! Have a wonderful Christmas, Cyndy!
I see a quilt that wants some contrast quilting (purple?) that will tie it together and make it sing!
I hear you about sometimes needing a project that uses your brain cells! LOL Sometimes, I need a mindless sewing project . . .perhaps, it is a mix? I like how you used the blocks and it is a nice finished top!
Isn't it funny how a group of blocks whose original intention was known can provide a boost of creativity? Great way to use these lovely prints.
You did a terrific job using those blocks. I like it and I'm sure someone will fall in love with it!
I like the quilt and for me, I envision the plainer blocks used as signature blocks with encouragement written in them. I was worried you were running low on grandmothers apron floral fabric, look for more coming your way soon. Merry Christmas our fearless leader.
It's wonderful to shape things that have been lying around and make something beautiful out of them.
Your top turned out great.
I wish you lots of creative inspiration for 2025.
I sewed and quilted lots of cup coasters and doilies this month... it was great fun.
Many merry Christmas greetings from Viola.
God Christmas for you.
you are very creative... thnaks for sharing
It's not easy to use up those odds and ends. You ended up with a lovely quilt from those bits and pieces of the stash.
