Oh Scrap! : Orphan Blocks and Panels

Here at Many Hands and Many Hearts, we do get various panels and orphan blocks included in packages containing blocks for the block drives.  It is always fun to see what shows up.  We don't often get to use them but Janet decided to pull a bunch of RWB blocks and lay out her first orphan block quilt. Here is the top all put together.

I think she did a pretty good job.  Now she did not have to figure out how to sew all that middle section together.  I have to admit, that took me a LONG time to figure out.  But I did get it done and we hope to get it quilted up soon.  We don't have a lot of completed Veteran quilts so we are trying to fix that.  We still have a number of churn dash blocks from the last block drive, but I think there will be another RWB block drive in the near future.

What block do you think it should be....

You both did an amazing job putting that one together! It's fun to look at and figure out how you did it. I really like the star within a star block on the bottom row - how about that one for a RWB block drive? Hope you're having a relaxing Sunday!

That's a lot of orphan blocks in one quilt. That's talented!

Another RWB block drive sounds great to me. How about red and white stripe blocks paired with white sawtooth stars set in a blue background?

Well quilters, I vote we get Janice in front of a sewing machine, she is definitely one of us. Many of those orphans are mine from the many many Quilts of Valor I make and award. We are currently in an USAF base in Fl for the winter and word has gotten out. We are having a presentation next week for two hero’s. I only brought two with me. Cynthia if you want a lot of colorful blocks fast, the scrap red, white blue rail fence will create a bunch of tops. My husband the retired USA always says us quilters are not looking at what the receiver sees. We see mismatch and mistakes and they see thank you’s and appreciation. The harder you make the block, the less participation we receive. I can put a rail fence block quilt together(blocks made previously )in a half a day. So having said my peace I will send you what is requested. I will be sending a box of the current block drive with flannel backs and a patriotic sort of back in red white and grey stripes. A great find at the Salvation Army.

How about Jacob's Ladder?

You both did a good job of putting together that quilt top. Great to see so many leftover blocks find such a great purpose. Holly is right to say those receiving the quilts really see your dedication and appreciation for their service. Great job everyone.
