Oh Scrap! : Cheddar is Better

 I had lots of plans for todays post but my Saturday got away from me.  So, I thought I would share one of my favorite scrap quilts that have been donated to Many Hands and Many Hearts.

One of my favorite quilt blocks is the bowtie block.  I haven't made one in a while, but it used to be one of my go-to blocks.  Denice made this quilt top.  I usually make larger sized blocks, but hers are a compact six inches - cute and tiny!  

But what really puts this quilt u to the top of my list was she used a cheddar solid for the background.  

I love any quilt with cheddar in it!

It took me a bit to decide how to back this quilt.  I finally chose this blue print sent in by Karen.  It is hard to see but the design on the blue is a faint tan/cheddar color.  It looks amazing!

We sent this off to Gloria to quilt.  I knew she would love it too!

The new block drive has been released.  I have decided to call these Friendship Bracelet blocks.  Thanks, Deanna, for suggesting the name. This drive runs until the end of November so there is lots of time to join in.  You can read more about it in this post.

Oh Scrap! : More Finishes

 I can't believe it is Sunday already.

All I sewed this week was attaching a few bindings to quilts and a few flannel rectangles into a couple of blocks.  My time was needed elsewhere.  This week we have our big Sew Day!

So All I can share are some completed quilts.  I doubt any of you will mind!

We have been working on quite a few kid quilts.  We have started taking in quilts into Bags of Love.  We help them out at the end of every year as demand grows.

This quilt came to us as a kit all ready for a volunteer to sew into a top.  Charlene has sewn quite a few kits together for us.  She also shows up at our monthly sew day at a local quilt store.  This quilt has an airplane theme, so I had a little fun and included some Snoopy fabric from Amy on the back. 

This one is all about dinosaurs.  These quilts are always a hit.  Kristin sent in this top and backing and Laura finished it up.  I love the blue plaid backing fabric.

Here is a fun little baseball quilt.  I am no longer sure who sent in this quilt top.  I think it was Sharon.  Kat sent us the backing fabric and Cindy quilted it up for us.  She loves the small ones!

This one was finished a long time ago, but I don't think I ever shared it.   Carol sent in this Holly Hobby quilt top and local longarm quilter Wanda finished it up for us.  I sew on a lot of the bindings, but I think Chris finished up this one for us.

Check out this bright, scrappy quilt.  I am guessing Karen used a few of her orphan blocks in this one.  We used two fabrics on the back - they came from Martha and Dusty.  I think Laura quilted and bound this one.

And finally, there is this lovely quilt.  I love the colors in it.  Mina sent in this quilt top, Dusty sent in this amazing purple backing fabric and local quilter Terry finished it up.  This is another one that was finished quite a while ago but wasn't shared.

Oh Scrap! : New Block Drive

 It is time for us to release another block drive.  If you get our newsletter, you may have already seen it.  I think it is a fast and fun block to make.  We will have lots of uses for this one.  Some may be made into kid quilts - others will go to adults.  I also think we will try to use these with some of the other blocks we have made in the past.  It just depends on what you send and how it inspires me!

Here are the blocks we will be making.  They are just a low volume print with a scrappy row of color across it.  You can make your strip of color from as many scraps as you want.  Most of mine have three.

I started out by making my scrappy strips.  Each strip should be a single color.  They are 2" x 8.5" long.  You can make them by precutting your pieces or just sew some of your scraps together and then trim to size.  I chose to cut my scraps 2" wide, sew them and then just cut them to the 8.5" length.

Now you need a low volume for the rest of the block.    I prefer a print with a white background, but if you only have cream, I am sure we can make that work.  I also don't want any plain white or cream fabric.  It needs to have some sort of small print on it.  White with black prints are fine to use. I don't think solid blocks will look good for these quilts.  They might create a dead looking spot.                     We don't want that!

You need to cut your low volume into the following:

4.5" x 8.5" Rectangle

3" x 8.5" Rectangle

Then you just need to sew them together.  The block should measure 8.5" square.  Sorry, my machine's tension is acting up and puckering - I am sure it really needs a clean.

Some Friday Finishes

I have lots of quilts to share with you today.  My plan was to make two posts this week but once again, I got busy.  So now they will all go on one long post.

Let's get started!

Here is a fun little sampler style quilt that we received.  Sadly, it is one that the maker's tag got lost.  I do know that the backing was donated by Kat and that local quilter Cindy finished it up for us.  This one makes me want to play with a bunch of orphan blocks.

Elizabeth sent us some of these strip quilts in kit form.  This one was assembled by Pam, quilted by Cindy and bound by Chris.  That is why we are called Many hands and Many Hearts.  

Kristi sent in this quilt top.  It is a fun layout for hourglass blocks. The vertical sashing really changes the look.  I will have to remember this!

This rail fence variation quilt top was sent in by Elizabeth.  This big floral backing we have used many times.  I think I pieced this back multiple times and used up the last of the bits.  It was the perfect colors for this little quilt.  Wanda quilted it and then Chris sewed on the binding.  I sewed on the label!

I think this quilt top was sent in by Denice.  What a fun scrappy quilt!  Former board member Melva donated the backing fabric, and Wanda quilted it up for us. 

I think Denice also sent in this lovely quilt top.  I have been wanting to do something similar with all of our solid scrappy chunks.  Pat sent in the pretty backing fabric and Wanda quilted it up.  

I love the brightness of this quilt.  Denice sent in the quilt top and Wanda quilted it up for us.  Thanks to Kat we had this more muted backing fabric.  The colors were perfect!

This sweet little teddy bear quilt top was sent in by Shannon. It was quilted by Cindy and bound by my neighbor Karol (who does not sew but wants to help).

Karen sent in this lovely blue star quilt top.  Nann donated this bright blue backing fabric, Wanda quilted it and Chris finished up the binding for us.  

Quite a show!  

I think I still have over a hundred finishes to share with you.  I am hoping one of these days I can catch up.  But things like newsletters, websites, and board meeting keep getting in the way.  In fact, the next newsletter and block drive will hopefully go out this weekend.  That is next on my list!

Oh Scrap! : Flannel

 It has been a really long time since I had a chance to play around with some scraps.  I did cut up a bunch of flannel scraps recently.  I am still cutting everything into 4.5" x 2.5" rectangles.

I have been focusing on the pink and blue scraps.  I almost have enough for another pink quilt already.  All of the other flannel scraps I have processed are waiting to be paired up with a low volume or to be sewn together in another configuration.  With the cooler weather on its way, we are switching over to flannel backings and that means more scraps!

I am just resigned to the fact that I will never catch up!

More Older Finishes

I have a few more finished quilts to share today.  

All of these are simple patterns but the quilts all look amazing!

This quilt was delivered long ago but I realized I never shared the quilt.  Wilma came to my house with a big pile of quilts all the way from California.  Some were finished and a few, like this one, just needed quilting.  The blocks on this one remind me a bit of the One Block Wonders.  It is a single fabric that is just cut and sewn in different ways.  A big thanks to Laura for quilting it for us!

Carol sent in this lovely quilt top.  The tulips in the light pink squares are really pretty.  Martha sent in a prink print we were able to use for the backing.  Master quilter Laura finishes this one up also.

Kristin sent in this fun Harry Potter quilt top and backing.  We really love the quilt "kits" she puts together for us. 

Rena made this fun quilt top.  It is made from all sorts of novelty scraps.  There is just so much to look at!  We continued with the novelty theme and put a horse flannel on the back.  This one will most likely go out for distribution to a teen.  A big thanks to Terry for quilting it for us.

One of my favorite quilt patterns made by Mina.  This one is done in green, blue and yellow.  Thanks to Karen we had the perfect turquoise backing fabric.  Terry also quilted this one up for us too.

Mina sewed together this jellyroll quilt top too.  I love the springtime colors she used.  Dusty sent in this purple floral - it is a favorite of mine!  It is so vibrant and luscious.  Local longarm quilter Gloria finished this one up for us.

Dusty also sent us this amazing quilt top.  We have a bunch of solid scrappy chunks and I might need to start a similar quilt.  I thought this pretty blue backing looked great with the blues and oranges in the quilt top.  I think the tag for the donor of this fabric got misplaced.

The parts for this fun quilt came to us as a kit.  All the parts were already cut and all Pam had to do was sew it up.  Jeanine sent in the juicy orange backing fabric and Gloria was able to quilt it for us.

I am slowly cleaning out my older photos and getting to where they are a little more organized.  One thing I have realized is methods for tracking have had to evolve as we grow.  

Those are all good growing pains!

The next block drive should be announced at the end of the month.  

I had better get some samples sewn up soon!
