Oh Scrap! : Slowly Moving Along

I really didn't feel like I spent too much time in my sewing room this week.  

So there is not a lot to share today!

 I have been continuing to make blocks for this quilt.

(Sorry about the poor photo but these colors do not photograph well with no natural light.)

I am pretty close to having all my blocks finished - then I will just need to work on the final layout and sew them up!

The other thing I did this week was to get out the final stack of orphan blocks to make a quilt from.  This one will be pretty straight forward.  I have a small stack of 4.5" HSTs leftover from a project.  I tracked down some coordinating scraps I had and a dark plum fat quarter that looks great with the others.  I will just need to decide on a layout.

The problem is I don't have any gray in my stash that matches the gray in the finished HSTs.  I probably could go and buy some but that is too easy!  

I do have a darker gray so I think I will make more HSTs so I have enough for a small quilt and see what I can make happen.

The great thing about playing with these leftover blocks and stash fabric is if it doesn't turn out, I don't feel bad...I just take what I learned and move on 😎

Finished...But not as Planned

I have finished another little quilt from the orphan block stash. I think this makes project number four.  This one was originally planned to be quite different but I never did find some purple fabric I swore I had.  But I still really like the finished wall hanging.

I featured an improv orphan block I received in a bag of scraps.  I love the colors and fabrics in it.

I have used the purple and white striped fabric (second in from both ends) in a previous quilt and thought I had more in my stash.  

I was originally going to incorporate that fabric and make a much bigger quilt.

Once I reorganized and folded my entire stash looking for that purple fabric, I realized I needed to come up with Plan B.  So I pulled a bunch of purple, pink and orange 9 patches out of the suitcase.  These were made from the extra 1.5" squares I cut for my postage stamp quilt.  

I knew they would come in handy some day!

BTW - Check out that binding fabric - Is it not perfect!

 Here it is in its entirety.  It measures about 26" x 30".

I really like how it turned out and decided I needed to keep it for myself.

Purple AND orange - I just couldn't let this one go!

 I had a large open space on one of the walls in my sewing room.  It just fits!

But looking at this photo, I think it is time for me to reorganize the artwork on all the walls in there.  I am sure they could be color coordinated a bit better!

But I love looking at them all (including the wall that is not shown) - I like the fact that they are all eclectic and come from lots of people.

They constantly inspire me!

A Super Cute Halloween Bag

I have joined forces with the Fat Quarter Shop and have a really fun trick or treat bag pattern to share with you today. I don't have any little ones so I made this for my friend's little granddaughter.

Didn't this turn out cute?

The pattern calls for three fabrics - all of these playful prints came right out of the stash.
There are so many adorable Halloween fabrics available now!

The pattern was really easy to follow along and sew.  The only change I made was to make my handles the same fabric as accent flange.

The pattern has you using a marker to draw a line to box the bottom of the bag.  As usual, I reached for my Hera marker.  It is definitely one of my favorite tools!

Oh Scrap! : October RSC Blocks

It is time to pull out those dark scraps for October's RSC blocks.  I didn't used to like these colors in my rainbow quilts but I have grown to appreciate them - especially brown.  It's warm color really blends well with all of the other colors.

I finished up my ten Bright Hope blocks in brown.  I don't have any plans to make them in black but I might make some in gray - I need to think about what size I want this quilt to be.

So far I only have forty of these 6" blocks so I have a long ways to go.

While I already shared my snail block last month, I did make a chicken block for my garden quilt.  Just so those snails don't get out of control (however my possum and raccoon family that I share my property with think they are a treat too.)

Last winter I was adopted by a wayward chicken so I wanted her in my quilt.  This is her staring in my studio window wanting food - it only took her about a day to find me.  She soon found she could actually get right on the window sill.  Which can be quite a shock when you turn around and aren't expecting her!  She has since found a new home and is quite happy.

I still need to make this month's blocks for my garlic knots and my 25-patch.

There is still plenty of time!

A Birthday Gift

I used to think it was weird to gift a quilting friend with a quilt - but then I received one myself and I realized it was kind of special to have a gift made just for you!

My dear friend is very much a modern / improv quilter.  So I thought it would be fun to make her a wall hanging for her new sewing room.  Both of us love purple so I started there and added in some gold and a bit of teal.

I used the Crosscut Blocks tutorial by Debbie over at A Quilter's Table.

This was a quilt along on Instagram quite a while back but I didn't participate then.

 I wanted very dense quilting so I used a purple thread and echoed some lines about a quarter inch apart. around the edges.  In the center, I opened up the space between to the lines to about a half inch.

She must be a very special friend because I took the time to sew in some corners along the top to use a sleeve if she wants to.  I just don't do that for everybody!

So Happy Birthday my friend!  I cherish our friendship and love how you inspire me to get out of my comfort zone with color and new techniques.

Another Something New

Somehow, as I allowed myself to start a new scrap quilt in pinks, oranges and yellows, I slipped some other scraps under my needle and started a second project.

This idea is another one that has been in my head for quite some time.  I have been just waiting for the right fabrics to come along.

As I was cleaning up some of my fabric, I came across this lovely Kaffe Fassett Collective fabric.  I had four wide strips that came off the backing trimmings from a previous quilt.

As I was standing in front of my stash pondering this fabric, my eye landed on this black and gold rose fabric (that I have NO idea where it came from but it really needs to go).

I knew I had the start to something fun.

I cut the big print into a 4.5" x 6.5" rectangle and framed it on three sides with a tiny strip of the black.  Then it was just a matter of adding two more fabrics to create a 10.5" x 9.5" block.

I have decided to use my scraps that are florals, geometrics and solids.  I also want to keep to the red, purple, green and brown colorways.

Here is what I have so far!

I seem to have become a bit obsessed with this one and have completely forgotten about the other dozen quilts in the works around my space.  Now that I see how it is going to look, maybe I can get back to working on a bit of everything and see some progress on other things.

Needless to say my sewing room is a scrappy mess right now.  I think the only color of scraps that aren't littering my workspaces are blue right now.

Fingers crossed I didn't just jinx myself...….
