When I saw that the color brown was chosen for So Scrappy's Rainbow Scrap Challenge for the month of October, my initial reaction was "I'm not putting brown in my quilt!" But after thinking about it for a few days, I decided to open my mind a bit and see what happens. I know it would certainly be nice to use up some of my brown scraps!
Even though I finished up one quilt using this block, I have been sewing more and have just about enough for a second quilt. I picked out some warm browns and made a few to put in the quilt. I don't think they are going to look too bad either!
I have been using and loving my AccuQuilt Studio 2 Fabric Cutter - especially the 2 1/2" square die. I can just pile on scrappy chunks and with a few cranks on the machine, I can have a big stack of perfect squares. It worked great for this block.
One thing I did do on this die was to mark some lines where the blades are to help guide me where to lay the fabric. I used a silver gel pen and it worked beautifully. I find I don't have as many miscuts now due to poor fabric alignment.
What about you - Have you been sewing with scraps this week?

I like your brown nine-patches, especially the top one: a luxury box of chocolates - you fold back the paper and there they are in all their deliciousness!
I love your scrap challenge blocks. The browns are going to look great! Kat @ katandcatquilts.blogspot.com
So glad you decided to give brown a try. I think it looks great! Die cut machines are a fabulous way to turn all the odds and ends into useable sizes.
I use brown in my RSC quilts and it always blends well with all the other colors.
I have a lot of scraps but not sure I'd actually use a die cut machine on them. Seems more of a hassle to me. That's why I like to see reviews by people who actually use them.
I had a 5 inch square die, and if I wasn't careful about how I put the fabric across the die, the cut would stretch and I would have 4.5 by 5" rectangles. With a smaller cut, have you had any issues with that or have they all come out square?
I think the brown will blend beautifully with the warm colors, but I would have been hesitant to use it as well. Nice to see your cutter in use. :)
I like how brown can cover a range from golden to red. Yours look wonderful!
Seeing everyone's projects is making me miss my stash... I'll be headed home next week, and I'll probably roll in my fabric when I get there!
Your die cutter looks really useful! I know I am not always very accurate when cutting, even with squares. It sounds like you needed to figure out some of its quiirks in order to use it the best way.
I'm glad you decided to add brown. It really does add a lot to the scrappy quilts to add in the brown and blacks. Thanks for hosting the link party.
Your Browns blend in very nicely. I think of them more as chocolate and that gives me a direction to head for, because there are just too many ways brown can go. Enjoy your cutter. A friend here in my building has one and just cut some strips for me, a great help. Thanks to your orphan quilt project, a group member here just finished the quilt I started for my son, now done in his memory. I will pick it up tomorrow and will share photos of it. Thank you again, Cyndi.
I really like your brown blocks. Great job in creating a second quilt at the same time. I will try and get linked up by next week. There are several of blogs that I follow that do this and it is always so fun to explore. I think it would be such a bonus to have others stop by my blog also. Thank you for sharing and inspiring. Have a wonderful creative day!
Love your brown prints and all your blocks. I enjoy your Scrappy link up. It's fun to see what others are doing.
I felt uneasy adding brown, gray and black to my rainbow quilts at first. Not anymore. Love quilts with all the colors in them that are in the crayon box.
I love the browns you picked!
Company is gone and this week I'm going to work on a pumpkin pillow after I watch your recommendation of Carol Doak's PP Craftsy class. :)
I've been trying to keep an open mind about browns too and am loving them with hot pink!
