OMG - A March Finish

At the beginning of March, I shared this stack of old stash fabric.  My One Monthly Goal (OMG) was to sew it up into a quilt by the end of the March.

I knew there were going to be challenges.  I had large cuts of the three focus fabrics so I needed those to be a large portion of the quilt.   So I decided to pull out my Hex N More ruler and cut out big 8 1/2" hexagons.  I then used the same ruler to cut 4 1/2" triangles from the smaller contrasting pieces.  So the large print focus fabrics now become the background and the smaller contrasting stars are the focus.

I even had enough fabric leftover from the front for part of the backing.  My initial plan was to use it with some of my Kona navy but then I remembered I had a couple yards of this old gradation fabric in my stash.  I think it looks pretty cool!

The quilting really shows on the back.  I went with a freehand ruffled swirl.

Making this stash quilt left a wee bit more room on my fabric shelf but I still have a lot more old fabric that needs to go.  I think I will continue to pull coordinating stacks for a few more months and see what I can make them in to.  So far that has worked great for January, February and now March.

That turned out great! I never would have thought you could use those large prints successfully in one quilt. No, what I really mean to say is only YOU could successfully use those prints in one quilt!

So bright, so gorgeous, so desirable! It turned out beautifully!

Both sides turned out gorgeous. I have to say a 'freehand ruffled swirl' sounds a bit like the name of a fly for catchiing some elusive fish. It seems to also hook more fabric shelf space, so wise choice.

It looks wonderful, great how you combined these bit oldfashioned fabrics to a harmonic coloured dream ! This is the big challenge to find the perfect pattern to bring out the secrets of fabrics. Chapeau - great work

Wow, this turned out terrific. It would work with some of my many large florals or oriental prints. Add one more to the long to-do list.

Wow. You did a great job. I love that the triangles pop and are the focus. And the back is awesome.

What an awesome pattern for large scale prints! Very dramatic finish Cynthia, congrats meeting your March goal, and I LOVE the ombre backing pieced to highlight theme fabric!!

I really do like this idea! Generally we think of the bold print as the focus fabric, no the smaller print. This really turns everything on it's ear! But I love it! Those triangles make such interesting stars. It's difficult to tell that your hexie quilt is made with older fabrics!

I love the quilt....I love the concept. I have a few beautiful big prints with black background and I wasn't sure how to use them. Black background fabrics are dramatic but a tad difficult to work with. This might be my answer. Thanks for all you share. micki@2dogsstudio.us

This is a gorgeous quilt, Cynthia! The contrasting colours bring the whole design to life, and the shade of red is so perfect. Your quilt is this week's featured project at Free Motion Mavericks!
Love, Muv
