It's a Fast Finish When They are Small

When I make quilts, I usually aim for a 60" x 72" finish.  For me, that is the perfect sized quilt.

Since I have been playing with my orphan blocks, I have been making small quilts - about 40" square.  I am realizing they sure go together quickly!

I have a little suitcase that I toss all of my orphan blocks and spare parts in.  Recently, I was unable to close it so pulled out some color coordinated stacks and decided to make a bunch of small quilts to re-build my baby quilt stash that I like to have on hand.

I recently played with a stack of orange orphans.  If you want to see how I constructed the top, you can take a look at this post.

Once I had the top finished, it took me no time at all to quilt it up and sew the binding.

I ended up quilting this one in the wee hours one night.  I have always said I can do swirl quilting in my sleep.  Of course, as I was taking photos of the quilt I kinda laughed at my work.  I must have really been tired there at the bottom edge of the quilt - I am glad this wasn't a client quilt!

I found a fun orange dot fabric for the backing.  It was just the perfect size!

So this makes quilt number three from my orphan block suitcase.

I am currently working on a purple orphan block project.  I would have that one further along, but I need to find a piece of a print I KNOW I have in my stash somewhere.

After three days of searching, I am beginning to think I am losing my mind :)

It's been educational seeing how you stitch up those left over blocks into finished quilts. The orange one turned out beautifully. My favorite one so far is the red, white and blue one. I'm a big fan of purple, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you do those left overs.

Lovely orphan quilt and it looks as though you have no shortage of orphan blocks ready to make more of these quilts.

You've been doing amazing things with your orphan block suitcase! I especially love all the orange in this one. I'm in the mood to sew with orange, too!

Making the small quilts is a great idea and you can probably use more offense that way and saving up for a big quilt. Happy quilting!!

The orange one turned out so good! I realize you used orphan blocks, but it looks like this was planned from beginning to end. That doesn't make sense...as it was planned! You knocked this one out of the park. It's inspiring how you reach into your bag of tricks and then come up with something like this!

It's a lovely little finish and so nice to use up those orphan blocks. Sounds like you keep a supply of baby quilts on hand for gifting. That's a great idea. What size do you like for baby quilts? In the past I have usually made quilts in the size you prefer but recently made some in the 42 x 54 size and found I really like the smaller lap size. They are definitely quicker. Have a great weekend.

This turned out to be so pretty and it doesn't look like orphan blocks at all. I have a box full of orphan blocks that also need to be put together in a quilt - or many quilts! I hope mine turns out as nice as yours!

Love it! It’s hard to believe this cute little quilt started life as orphan blocks.

What a sweet little baby quilt! I wish I could quilt half as decently wide awake as what you quilt “in your sleep!” This one is such perfect Fall colors, too. I really love it.

These smaller quilts have become my new favorite size...well, maybe just a little bigger. I keep one folded up on the backs of my two favorite seats to place over my lap when I’m feeling chilled. Plus they are the perfect size for travel. Storing your orphan blocks in a designated suitcase is genius. Mine are all over the place! Try as I might, I can’t keep organized. I love what you’ve been building and feel so inspired every time you post a new finish.

Another fabulous quilt from orphan blocks! You'll want to be careful or people will start sending you their orphans to look after. Seriously, it's lovely.
