This One Wiggled Right In!

Slowly, I am claiming back my cutting table.  Last week, as I was digging through some of the fabric that was stacked around, I came across a bunch of the trimmings from the backings of various quilts - you know, those long strips of fabric.

I really didn't want to stuff all of these into my stash so I brainstormed what I could do with them.  Lucky for me, they were all shades of orange.  I had a number of pieces of an orange daisy fabric because I had used it for a bunch of backs.

The widths of the strips were just perfect for my Wiggle Time pattern so I grabbed a few dark orange fat quarters (top and bottom) from my stash and started sewing.

I usually use a solid for the background, but this butterscotch daisy fabric sure worked well.

I still had a few other chunks of the fabric from the front that I used on the back to tie the quilt all together.  What few bits of fabric were left all went into the orange scrap bin.

 Now I have a cute little quilt ready for a new home!  I am really happy I used a print as the background.  I have been seeing a number of quilts from this pattern made that way, and they have all looked amazing.

Here is a photo of one of my clients' Wiggle Time quilts on my longarm frame.  I love the striped background fabrics she used.

 And I was recently emailed this photo from a beginner quilter I met at a quilt show in Salem.  She purchased the fabric for it there at the show but it is so special to see it all together.  

She did a beautiful job on it!

A Round Finish

When you quilt for others for a living, you never know what quilt jobs you are going to be challenged with.  It has been a while since I shared one of my customer's quilts and I thought this one you would like to see!

Not too long ago, one of my clients brought to me a gorgeous round paper pieced quilt.  It was about 72" wide and she planned on displaying it on a big wall..  When you load this up on a longarm frame, the backing is a large square and you "float" the top (which means it is not pinned to the frame).  The challenging part can be keeping it round!

The colors in this one are beautiful.  But that also meant a lot of thread color changes for me.

It is always fun to work on something different - especially when it is a lovely as this quilt!

Quilt Show Quilts

Recently I found out that two quilts I custom quilted for a client took first and second place at the Northwest Quilt Show in Portland Oregon.  I am so delighted for my client - she does beautiful work and I am happy she is getting the acknowledgement she deserves.

Here she is with one of Judy Niemeyer's Mariner's Compass quilts.  She won a second place ribbon on this one.


















Here is a picture of the quilt on my machine.

A whole lot of feathers, line work and dense fills on this quilt.  And these quilts are not small!












On this stunning quilt she received a first place ribbon.  I have a whole blog post with lots of pictures if you want to see more of the details.

I really had fun quilting this one!















And I just finished up another one for her grandson.  This one is called Sabertooth Star.  A little different than the big medallions but the tiny detailing is still there.

















Lots of matchstick quilting went into this one.

Getting the quilting to turn around the corner was a challenge.  But I do like how it turned out.
















And turning the corners where the sashing met the outer borders was an even bigger challenge.

We didn't do a lot of fancy quilting on this one.  Because it was for a young man, we didn't want it to get too swirly.  Therefore, we made it all about the texture.

I don't think this one is going to any quilt shows but I do know my client is already thinking about future shows.  I am sure I will have many more beautiful quilts to share in the future!

Fun Quilts to Share

Being a longarm quilter, I get to see some awesome quilts and I thought I would share a few recent client quilts that really caught my eye.

A beautiful Gypsy Wife quilt - So much scrappy goodness!  I love that I get to be a part of a quilt like this that I will probably never sew myself.

 I quilted horizontal lines at irregular width around various blocks where I did some custom detail.

I fell in love with this variation of a drunkard's path block.   I did add this pattern to my own quilty bucket list after working on this one.  What is one more project!

 I just echo stitched and added in some swirls.  My quilt will not be this large, I am not a fan of sewing curves so I cannot imagine me sticking with these blocks for long.  But I sure love the look of it!

And there was this beauty.  This is just one corner of the quilt as it was too big to photograph. The applique on this one was done beautifully and the piecing was perfect.

 

 Lots of detail quilting on this one.  It was made entirely from batiks and the colors just glowed!

So as you can see, I have been spending long hours at my machine lately.  I still have a number of other big quilts to work through so I will be sharing more in the future.
