Oh Scrap! : Fun with Scraps

Do you ever obsess about a block you have seen?  I know I said I was going to try and just focus on finishes for the rest of the year but KnitNKwilt shared this block earlier this month on Oh Scrap! and I have thought about it ever since.

Last week I received some new dies for my AccuQuilt Studio fabric cutter and I just had to try them out.  The one I was most excited about was the 4.5" multiple square.

I quickly pulled some pinks, oranges, plums and dark red scraps and got to cutting.  Within  minutes I had a big stack of luscious squares.

I already had a number of smaller blue squares I had previously cut using my 2.5" multiple die.  These I started sewing into little 4 patches.

 Here is my test block and I admit, I am in love!  When more blocks get sewn and they are laid out together, I think it is going to be gorgeous and rich in color.

My Accuquilt cutter was an expensive purchase but now when I think of all the time I used to spend each evening cutting scraps into little squares and then waking up in the morning with stiff hands, it is worth every penny.  Not to mention, my squares are really accurate now!

I also bought a 3.5" square die.  I have future plans for that one too so stay tuned!

Another Happy Finish

One of the downfalls to sewing blocks as a leader/ender project is that it is REALLY easy to get a little carried away.  Which is what happened on some 9 patches recently.

I recently finished this fun 9 patch quilt and sent it off to a charity.  My initial plan was to create an outside border in more 9 patches so I decided to sew a few up to see how it looked.

Well, a few quickly turned into many.  And I decided I liked the quilt best without borders.

What to do?  Why sew up another quilt!

This one I did in all warm colors.

And yes, that includes some brown blocks in there.  I admit I have never used brown in my brightly colored quilts but with a gentle nudge from Angela over at  So Scrappy, I tried it and discovered it works great.  I am all for getting some of those brown scraps out of the tub and into a quilt!

I was able to use up more really old fabric on the back.  I am finally making a dent in my black and white fabrics so my choices are getting to be smaller and smaller cuts.

 

 Thankfully, I paid more attention to the number of blocks I was making so this one will be the last in this pattern.  This is the block I made as my Rainbow Scrap Challenge for 2016.  I just picked a new block for 2016 - and I started out with the color brown!

I can learn new things!

I am happy to say finishing this quilt is my October goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes with Sew BitterSweet Designs.  It feels wonderful to get some of these WIPS done!

New Rainbow Scrap Challenge Block

For weeks, I have been contemplating a new block for my next Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt.  Like the 9 patch quilt I recently finished, I wanted a block that could easily be sewn without a lot of cutting or digging through scraps.  

I knew I wanted something that used a lot of 2.5" squares because I always have a bunch of these on hand.  Having them organized by color makes it really easy to pick fabrics for each block.

 So this morning, I just decided to make a really simple chain block.  It consists of just squares that can be easily sewn as a leader and ender project.  And it gives me another excuse to play with low volumes as a background fabric.

In no time at all, a second one was sewn.  I decided to start my next RSC quilt using the brown color for October. These blocks will finish at 12" so for a nice big lap quilt, I will probably make a total of 20 to 30 blocks.

Each month I plan on sewing 2 blocks.  I have no idea how I will join them...I will need to finish quite a few more blocks until I start thinking about that. 


Until then, they will just be pinned to my design wall and allowed to grow into a quilt!
