A Rainbow Scrap Challenge Finish

I decided to just finish up one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt.

My initial plan was to make the quilt 60 x 72" but I decided to just finish it with the 20 blocks I had completed already.  I tend to make some of my quilts a little bit too big, so this rainbow quilt will be lacking in red and yellow blocks.  I don't think anyone will mind.

The sun is so bright today, I had to snap a photo on one of my shady patios to keep the glare down as much as I could.  Sorry about the green hose :)

The fabrics for the top came entirely out of the scrap bins - even the backgrounds.  I will most likely donate this one so there is a lot of different prints for someone to explore.

In the dark purple square, you can see the quilting pattern I used - a combination of a swirl and feathers.

On the back, I used a soft green fabric I picked up at Connecting Threads a long time ago and used a colorful stripe for the binding.

This was a simple block to make because it was just squares.  I will definitely be playing with this design again in the future.

One of the things I love about the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is that it keeps me focused on using my scraps every month.  Otherwise, all of my scrap quilts would be purple, red and/or orange.  And I would rarely use my green, brown or blue scraps.

September's color is red so I am busy sewing up the blocks for my other RSC projects.

I hope to share some of those soon!

Oh Scrap! : RSC Green

For the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, the color for the month of November is lime green.  I finished my RSC15 quilts so I have already picked a block for 2016 and started sewing together some of the blocks.

I am still on the fence as to whether I am going to also make an alternate star block so for now, I am only making two blocks each month until I get a feel for how this is going to look.

For far I only have blocks for lime and brown.  I also could just add some sashing.  I don't feel the need to make a decision yet.  I always feel quilts will tell you what they want to become.

What about you - Have you been sewing with scraps this week?

New Rainbow Scrap Challenge Block

For weeks, I have been contemplating a new block for my next Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt.  Like the 9 patch quilt I recently finished, I wanted a block that could easily be sewn without a lot of cutting or digging through scraps.

I knew I wanted something that used a lot of 2.5" squares because I always have a bunch of these on hand.  Having them organized by color makes it really easy to pick fabrics for each block.

So this morning, I just decided to make a really simple chain block.  It consists of just squares that can be easily sewn as a leader and ender project.  And it gives me another excuse to play with low volumes as a background fabric.

In no time at all, a second one was sewn.  I decided to start my next RSC quilt using the brown color for October. These blocks will finish at 12" so for a nice big lap quilt, I will probably make a total of 20 to 30 blocks.

Each month I plan on sewing 2 blocks.  I have no idea how I will join them...I will need to finish quite a few more blocks until I start thinking about that.

Until then, they will just be pinned to my design wall and allowed to grow into a quilt!

Saying Goodbye to the 1930's

Last November, I decided to purged my stash of all the 1930's reproduction fabrics and get them sewn into some quilts.  Most of the fabrics I had for years, others I had inherited along the way.  Some of the pieces were fat quarter size but many were smaller so I figured a couple of quick scrappy quilts and they would all be gone.  I could then move on to something new!

First there was this large log cabin lap quilt.  I figured making a very scrappy quilt would hopefully make a big dent in the fabrics.  Boy, was I wrong!

So I sorted up the remaining fabrics into some coordinating fabric piles.  The blue and red pieces were made into this large churn dash lap quilt.

Still having some blues left and needing a class sample for a class I was teaching, I made this baby quilt using my Tangerine Dreams pattern.

The green, oranges and pinks went into one of my Scrap-A-Palooza quilts.
This one is a nice size lap quilt.

...and because I still had quite a few pieces in this colorway, I made a second variation for a baby quilt.

That left the purples.  I was teaching my pattern again so I made another baby quilt for a class sample.

I still found myself with quite a few scraps in blue so this week I sewed up some string blocks and quilted up this final lap quilt.  While I still have the odd scrap piece, finally the stash of 1930 reproductions fabrics are all sewn up!  Woo Hoo!

I wish I had taken a photograph of the fabrics I started with.  It is hard to believe that little pile of fabrics made all of these quilts.  It just goes to show how far scraps will go!

A Fun Time Teaching!

Recently, I had the pleasure of teaching my Tangerine Dreams pattern to a group of wonderful quilters at Our Sewing Room in Springfield Oregon.
(The pattern was published in the Sept/Oct 2013 issue of Quilty magazine).
It was a fun day spent with new friends!

Many of the students loved the colors in my original quilt so there was a lot of pretty gray and orange fabrics to look at.

Before the end of the class, everyone finished up the center block of their quilt.
Here are a few photos of some pretty finishes and their shy makers.
One student even finished up two blocks.  She chose a more masculine colorway and pulled all the fabrics from her stash.  Everyone has promised to send me pictures of these quilts when they are finished.
As a class sample, I sewed along using up some more of my 1930's reproduction fabrics.
(Boy will I be happy once all these fabrics are gone!)
Here is my cute little baby quilt all finished up.  Very sweet!

As of right now, I don't have any quilting classes scheduled but I am hoping to line some up in the Eugene area for this fall.  I am hoping to organize a class or two that combine colorwork and playing with scraps.  As I get something scheduled, I will be updating my Classes page.  So if you are interested in taking a class, keep checking back or drop me a line.
